I love Marc Jacobs

May 21st 2007 00:22
What I really wish I had right now is the entire Marc Jacobs Fall 2007 Ready to Wear Collection. So rarely do I view a collection and consider that not only would I wear just about every piece therein but would look exquisite, savvy and elegant in the process. This collection is a sort of blend of Gatsby-esque 20s chic and slender 70s day-wear. Jacobs manages to create a collection so rich in detail and pleasurable in palate that I just want to eat it all up.

Some examples. To begin here is Nicholas Ghesquière’s favourite model Liya Kebede in a quasi-sailor coat, turtle-neck, cream trousers, two tone hat and striking yellow leather bag. Each of these elements is relatively unremarkable on their own but in conjunction with her laissez-faire facial expression and the exactness in the colouration and style of the accessories, this ensemble is altogether an aesthetic pleasure. It doesn’t have the glitz of Galliano or even the glamour of the last Vuitton show but it exemplifies style.

Image number two is a little bit Ralph Lauren Collection but somehow more successful. Again it is the combination of the outfit and accessories which separates this design from competitors. The brooch, coordinated gloves and hat band and the discreet matching handbag and shoes are symbiotically generating beauty.

To die for

If I could have one designer ensemble this season it would be this one. Each of the elements could be recombined to reinvent an Autumn wardrobe. Again the palate is limited to a scale of black and grey through maroon and purple to a hint of red. The dress whispers sophistication without a hint of boredom as the boots harden an otherwise purely elegant look. With the handbag suitable for hitting thieves and a hat which could go to church or a night-club, I want it!

Grey minidress

This final example is one of the few points where Jacobs directly acknowledges current trends. His mini-dress and black opaque stockings, a look seen on every street corner at the moment, is somehow separate. A distinction again made by his restrained use of colour and form, and I’ll say it one last time, I must have one of those hats.

I know the collection came out a while ago but as the weather finally gets colder I look at my wardrobe and wish...
