When hair goes bad...
April 24th 2007 05:41
I got a hair cut last week. It took 4 and a half hours for a full head of foils, a cut and blow dry. And after four and a half hours and about a jar of product it looked pretty good. Of course, as you all know, the real test comes when you wash your hair that first time. I left it as long as I could, until the grease got too much, then I washed it.
And disaster stuck. It's insane. Literally insane. It sticks out at the strangest angles and bumps out where my ears are so it looks like wings on the side of my head. The back is flat as a tack after sleeping on it. It just looks ridiculous and I have no idea how to get it back to how the stylist did it.
So to honour my disaster of a hair cut, I am dedicating this post to bad hair day solutions.
According to www.ehow.com, these are the step-by-step solutions to a bad hair day:
1. Wet down hair with warm water, add styling mousse or gel, then restyle.
2. If restyling is not an option, cover hair with a hat or scarf.
3. Opt for the slicked-back look if a hat or scarf is unsuitable. Wet hair, add gel or mousse, pull hair into a ponytail. Allow to air-dry.
Well, that's not very helpful for those of us with a bad hair life, so let's look at fashion solutions
Hats
Yeah, the most obvious and easiest. If you wear a hat, people will either think you have bad hair or are just really super sunsmart (which is a good thing, of course). Problem is, hats can look a bit stupid if not fully integrated with the outfit. Don't just throw on a hat as an after thought, plan the outfit around the hat. Opt for a cute page boy cap in grey or black, or if your more laid back, try a straw Trilby ala Kate Hudson/Kate Moss.
Ponytails
This doesn't help me, because I have short hair, but if you're hair's long and it's refusing to co-operate, don't fight it. Embrace the messy ponytail or bun, either high with a small quiff to keep your fringe out of your eyes, or low and loose. Just remeber to avoid the centre part when it's messy. Such a bad look.
Jenna Elfman gives us a beautiful example of a messy ponytail. Obviously, we mere mortals don't have teams of stylists to do it for us, but we can try
Head scarves/Head bands
They were everywhere last season, and while I think they're pretty much on their way out, don't be afraid to crack one out if the bad hair fairy happens to visit. Vintage scarves can be a particularly cool and cheap option, almost any Op shop will have a whole range of scarves and you're bound to find something good. I've found cool nautical and retro orange print ones for $2 each at my local St Vinnies. They look great with your fringe peeking out the front and huge sunnies like Nicole Richie. Just remember to wash them before you wear them! Designer options include Pucci and Missoni.
So, while I go and experiment with said head scarves and lament my wayward locks, I wish everyone else better luck with their hair related matters.

And Charles, there is NO way I'm posting a picture! How embarrassing! Yeah, I know 4 and a half hours is ridiculous. But a full head of foils takes forever, and then you have processing time. As well as that, my stylist is sloooow.
