Vintage Stewardesses
April 17th 2008 11:13
Ho ho ho, this a tremendous find....
Dark Roasted Blend has a great gallery of old photos and advertisements of stewardesses in the 60s, perhaps the most exciting time of American aviation. Well, to those of us that like stewardesses.
There's a lot of leg on display, which reminds us of the battle for equality that women went through in the 60s. Certainly, these stewardesses were prodded and groped like well-shaped pieces of meat gallivanting down the aisles, serving minute steaks and spirits.
But check out those colours! And the cut of the uniform! I never saw the 60s first-hand, so I can only imagine how amazing it was based on Austin Powers movies.
Sad, I know.
Still, there's something else about this photoset that makes it alluring. It's the sense of careless fun that seemed to be omnipresent in the 60s. They look happy, and they look good smiling.
It's been a long time since a modern model has smiled like that into a camera. Now it seems that the look du jour is the dark eyeshadow coupled with a morose sullenness that is supposed to pass as mysterious...

Ah, the memories. Yes, sometimes we did dress like that....
Youtube has some very good 1970's commercials, especially for Southwest Airlines...Although, I think it was National that had the "Fly Me" phrase.
It may not have been right - but sometimes it was fun
