What I Want for Valentines Day
February 13th 2007 21:05
In the spirit of Valentines Day, I thought I would write about three of the most lust-worthy lingerie labels on the international fashion scene. I felt the most obvious place to begin was with the incredibly lush Italian label La Perla.
La Perla began as a corsetry label in 1954, founded by Ada Masotti in Bologna. She began by making corsets for wealthy women, specialising in handmade lace and embroidery, and these are still La Perla’s specialties. From humble beginnings, the label developed to become a market leader in the lingerie sector, combining innovative ideas with traditional designs and impeccable quality. La Perla is now present in various market sectors, placing itself at the top end of the market under a variety of brands. These include Malizia, Marvel, and Occhi Verdi for women, and Grigio Perla for men.
La Perla's pieces can cost over $300 but many agree that this glamorous and chic lingerie is well worth it, as the company uses only the highest quality lace and fabric, and the well considered designs are irreplaceable.
Did you know…
James Bond and his leading lady Solange in Casino Royale both wore bathers from the La Perla range? While Bond sported his own pick from the Grigio Perla collection, costume designer Lindy Hemming chose a vintage apple green sequin embroidered bikini for Solange. Very well suited to this strong and seductive Bond Girl.
Second on my list of favourites would have to be the cheeky lingerie label Agent Provocateur. Agent Provocateur has become well known in the UK where it began in 1994 opened by designers Joseph Corre (the son of Vivienne Westwood!) and Serena Rees, and has since ventured into the US becoming a favourite label for the likes of Carmen Electra and Paris Hilton.
Unlike La Perla, the lingerie created by the Agent Provocateur team is far less classy and a whole lot more kinky, often featuring tassles, suspenders and half cup bras, with excessive ruffles in lace and ribbon on the knickers. It is high quality designer lingerie but with creative flair, and it is no secret that the aim is to stimulate and arouse. In fact, the staff at the London store are said to wear nurses outfits and fishnets!
Did you know…
Kate Moss, who models for Agent Provocateur, wears only Agent Provocateur bras and knickers?
Finally, in third place I’ve put Aubade, perhaps not as well known but equally as classy as my top two. This French label, as it is currently known, began in the 60’s and has kept its place in the market by combining sex appeal with wearability and durability.
Did you know...
All Aubade advertising has always been in black and white?
For those (like myself) who haven’t got the bank balance to buy this type of luxury lingerie, I thought I would briefly mention three of my favourite affordable lingerie labels (that are far more readily available as well).
Of course no Aussie can go past a good pair of Bonds knickers. And especially now that they’ve introduced the new Intimates Collection, which is everything you love about Bonds only sexier. For a more elegant range, Elle Macpherson sets are girly yet sexy, while Kylie’s range Love Kylie is a bit more cheeky and fun, and often features ribbons, ruffles and suspenders.
On that note, have a very happy Valentines Day!
