The Lonliest Prada Store in the World

December 30th 2007 18:10
If you're ever in Texas - specifically, a little town called Marfa, Texas - and you're riding along behind Highway 90 in the middle of nowhere, there's still a place to scratch your Prada itch.

Prada store in the middle of the desert

From Deputy Dog:

"behind the glass a selection of shoes and bags, presumably more expensive than the structure itself, have sat untouched since 2005."

I think it's a good thing. This way, if you're ever crawling through the desert, lost and dying from thirst, you'll see the Prada store and think it's a mirage. Then you'll crawl up to it, croaking 'water... water...' and look inside. The supple leather handbags will dissuade your thirst and the retail clerk will usher you inside.

'Sorry,' she'll say 'but we don't take American Express...'

No, don't worry... it's actually a clever piece of art from two German artists, Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset, who wanted to make a statement about luxury goods in contrast to the harsh reality of the unforgiving desert. Still, shoes!

Sometimes I hate fashion, or more specifically, when something is in fashion. As someone who consistently tries to not wear the in-the-moment look, being confronted by what seemed like every girl on George Street wearing my style was like a slight on my wardrobe philosophy.

This happened a few years ago, and according to fashion experts, designers, icons and industry persons, it is not going away too soon. If ever. The buzzword I’m referring to is ‘vintage’. Trawl eBay these days and anything you’re looking for is likely to be touted as ‘vintage’, ‘retro’, ‘old-school’ and ‘so [insert era]’. To clarify, I don’t have a problem with vintage wear at all. It practically consumes all my hangers, shelves and drawers. My issue is with the consequences and ramifications of ‘vintage’ becoming what I would call a cultural movement

Is SJP to blame? - image from typepad.com

Blame Carrie Bradshaw and her Patricia Field Sex and the City ways, but it seems that the spring trend from the Northern Hemisphere is set to make its way down under. A more streamline and elegant alternative to the hobo and the tote bags we’ve seen lately, introducing the new day clutch

Snatch-proof handbags

June 18th 2007 00:59
Having had a handbag snatched off my person on Cleveland Street last year I’ve been a little more wary of this particular fashion accessory. After all, I not only lost the bag (beautiful black leather with pink and white candy striped lining) but worst of all my notebook! Thankfully, designers this year have taken this general concern into account with the inclusion of the detachable shoulder strap. So when walking through a dodgy part of the city you can sling your sac around your body in an effort to prevent further heartbreak (and lost genius in the form of moleskines.)

After visiting the Victoria and Albert exhibition which travelled to the National Gallery in Canberra a few years ago, I’ve been obsessed with Vivienne Westwood. It’s not just that she’s sixty and has a beautiful thirty-year-old Italian lover, although that does impress me, and it’s not just that she’s been an inspiration for generations of fashionistas, mostly it’s because for Westwood, fashion is thought

One of the most striking models of the contemporary brat pack is Jessica Stam, a statuesque Canadian who has the kind of natural physique required for catwalk shows. She is indeed long and slender but there is nothing painful about the proportions of her legs or the position of her clavicle. My general rule is that if the knee is wider than the thigh there’s a problem but Stam is in proportion as you can see from the Stella McCartney show.

Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy
From photobucket.com

Although Coco Chanel was really the first to bring the black dress into the everyday wardrobe of the modern woman, its place was indeed cemented with Hepburn’s appearance in Givenchy during Breakfast at Tiffany (see Sisi's post) last year for more on that dress

Gemma Ward Balenciaga

After using Balenciaga as an example in my white shirt post I remembered what a stand-out collection Nicolas Ghesquière produced for Fall 2007 collection and I was reminded by our very own (why are we so patriotic when it comes to beautiful people) Gemma Ward wearing Balenciaga at Cannes.

Staples: Boots

Yucky Burberry boots
From Net-a-porter.com

The story with boots this winter is a varied and confusing one for those invested in trends. Plenty of antipathy abounds towards ankle boots due in part to the use and abuse of said item in the 80s but I think there’s plenty of good versions, you just have to look. This Burberry boot is an example of what not to wear, the quasi-cowboy top and slick patent combine to create a sick hybrid of confused trends

Staples: White shirt

May 25th 2007 00:12
It's been said before but one of the greatest items in a woman's wardrobe is a good white shirt. I have two already and was tempted again today at a shop on Crown Street Surry Hills because they are so damn useful. From the corporate setting, to casual wear, and even, with the right combination, for evening-wear, a white shirt will invariably serve a fashionista well.

The Verdict

March 20th 2007 08:04
Futurism vs The New Romantics. Two ground-breaking trends. Two key looks on the Spring 07 runways. Two movements guaranteed to have an enormous impact on this season of fashion.

But there can only be one winner. And for me that winner is

As promised, The New Romantics get their turn.

In the Spring 07 runways, there were many designers who had at least a piece or two inspired by this flower-happy trend, so, unlike my discussion of Futurism which was dominated by Balenciaga, I'm going to be talking about a range of designers from YSL, Chloe, Oscar de la Renta and Alexander McQueen (though I realise he's also mentioned in the Futurism section, he's my crossover dude, every genre needs one) and a bunch more. For more recent examples of what I'm talking about, look at Marc Jacobs’ heavily floral-inspired work for Louis Vutton
