To see or not to see...

March 22nd 2007 05:50
I, like many other people out there, am a glasses-wearer.
I have to wear glasses all the time (except when I wear contacts), so they are probably the most important accessory I own. If you wear glasses, it’s important to have a pair (or two or three!) the suits your face shape, colouring and says something about you. Of course, nothing beats going to your Optometrist and trying a bunch of frames on, but if you have an idea of what you want, it can be cheaper to buy the frames online.

According to the Vision Council of America there are three main things to remember when choosing frames:

•The frame shape should contrast with the face shape.
•The frame size should be in scale with the face size.
•Eyewear should repeat your personal best feature (such as a blue frame to match blue eyes). (For more info visit of www.allaboutvision.com)

Here are some styles for you to think about:

Statement Glasses:
If you, like me, are willing to embrace that you are optically challenged, then why not give statement glasses a go. Look for plastic frames in funky or dark colours. If you’re going for a bright colour like red or purple, keep the shape conventional (a slightly rounded rectangular shape suits many face shapes) and the frames on the thin side, but if you’re going to get plain black frames then go for something a little more out there (sharper angles, bigger frames with thicker arms). Here are some examples, courtesy of www.framesdirect.com and www.bestbuyeyeglasses.com.

D&G glasses. I love this shape, it's so funky

Fendi glasses. If you hate fading into the background, go for some colour

Vera Wang Feline glasses. These are totally sexy

Understated Glasses:
Sometimes you want people to see you and not your glasses. For an understated look, try thin metal frames (still in a style that suits your face-shape) in bright metallics, wireless frames (though be careful as they make you look older) or fine plastic frames in warm tones (browns, beiges or even tortoiseshell). More pics for you to squint over. Hahaha, I crack myself up.

Valentino glasses. Fine, understated and classic

Guess glasses. They're so clear, you can't be sure they're actually there. Very cool

Nine West glasses. Semi-rimless, these will make your eyes look bigger

I don't wear glasses all the time, but at the moment I have a pair of thin metal frames in a deep red shade. I love the colour, but I don't think that pair really suits me. My face is quite long and thin, so many styles simply look too big for my face.

My boyfriend has the same problem. Thin faces can be hard because they look way too wide.
Maybe try roundish ones that flare out and up slightly at the temple to add width to your face, without looking crazy big.

i have 2 pairs - gautier and prada but both are similar in styling thick black plastic frames and i know how important a good pair is. but i get self conscious wearing glasses for the very reason i used to get a lot of teasing when i was a little kid or comments like 'he'd be good looking if he didn't wear glasses' (girls making that assessment about me probably need to wear glasses too!). so i have a glasses complex.

the most important thing to keep in mind when looking at frames it to make sure that your eye centers well in the lens. not only the frame will look good, but when the lenses are fitted they will look better too, espeshaly if you have a higher script.
bright colours are great, but make sure that the compliment you skin tone. for something a bit diffrent try greens. they tend to work well for most people.
my favourite brand of specs is la font. they have a concept store on oxford st in sydney and are hot french frames that feel great on.
