The Verdict

March 20th 2007 08:04
Futurism vs The New Romantics. Two ground-breaking trends. Two key looks on the Spring 07 runways. Two movements guaranteed to have an enormous impact on this season of fashion.

But there can only be one winner. And for me that winner is…..

Futurism!

In the end it comes down to personal choice and personally, I think that Futurism is the more daring and innovative of the two. I also think it’s hella sexy, sleek and just plain cool.

Let’s not completely dismiss those poor old Romantics. They certainly have their place in the fashion world. And they’re still very current. If you look at what was being shown for autumn, you can see that it’s a trend that is here to stay. So hang on to your shift dresses and floral accessories.

As you may know, Balenciaga’s latest Fall Ready-To-Wear collection is nothing like last season’s cyber-space effort. They’ve gone very earthy, Native-American-Indian-meets- 60s-folk-singer-meets-Russian -Peasant-meets-Eskimo-Princes s (not to be too descriptive, or anything…). However, I think it will be hard to forget their Spring 07 collection, which I think is one of the most inspired collections I’ve seen in a long time. And its legacy will be significant, as will that of Lanvin and Stella McCartney who also channelled the intergalactic influence.

And of course we can’t talk about Futurism without mentioning that amazing show by Hussein Chalayan. You may have seen it on the net: the fantastic mechanical dress collection including the hat that ate the model’s dress leaving her completely naked (not suprisingly, my boyfriend thought this was the best thing ever). It’s an incredible spectacle, though obviously unlikely to directly influence the fashion world, however you never know. If the role of designers is to constantly challenge the status quo and subvert the traditional, then Chalayan has certainly done his job.

I've no doubt many of you disagree with me, which is great. I'd love to hear what you think about the two trends, so go ahead, comment below!

So now, a little look at the winner, Futurism. (As usual courtesy of those crazy cats at Style.com)

Oh Balenciaga, you are so cool.

Those Balenciaga metallic leggings from Fall/Winter last year are definitely at the top of my wanted list (I think I might make some, still need to buy a new sewing machine though..)
