The long and short shorts

October 29th 2007 00:01
A short story about Short shorts, long shorts, dress shorts and board shorts.

fashion Shorts
Shorts that mean business

Covering the goods and exposing varied amounts of the leg, trimmed pants known as shorts were once considered a fashion faux pa for both sexes. Designed for Spring and summer, for years shorts were only worn by lads till a certain age. For women a longer knee cut was demanded in keeping with the discretion of polite society.

This has bright class

Universally consider casual wear, there is a laid back stigma to wearing shorts that still exists today. Ridiculous when you look at what the latest designers have done to dress them up. Now there are pairs that are positively stylin’ and would not be out of place at any high level function.

Dress Shorts
Dress shorts for delicate comfort

Traditionally worn by the army troops stationed in the tropics or on exploration safari’s through the jungles of Asia and Africa. Board Shorts for surfing and swimming have long been acceptable at the beach.

Men and Women wearing them in the city has boomed in the last 20 to 30 years with the urban wear culture removing a lot of the social dress code of the past.

For the girls, the bold go with the cut off denim daisy dukes, a daring display of flesh that is most appreciated by us shallow beings. Men can also wear them but that’s just a disturbing mental image.

On the runway designers experiment with lines and the results are stunning.

The girls too get active wear and beach shorts that can be worn elsewhere.

Cargo’s and khaki’s for casual wear are the preferred choice for guys. There comfortable fit and endless supply of pockets makes them practical too.

The humidity today (Sunday) in Sydney has me cracking out the light cotton knee length cargo’s in the hope of staving off heat exhaustion when walking around. What shorts are for you?

I love shorts! This post has made me realise that I have an unhealthily large collection of shorts...I basically own a pair of shorts similar to every female pair you have pictured here...oh the shame!

Multicoloured stripey cuffed mini ones with rope tie by Sumakhi, white version of the same ones by Sumakhi, Cotton On khaki mini ones, black Kate Hurst knee-length ones, black high-waisted mid-thigh Charlie Brown ones, black satin Zara mini ones...and various other black ones that aren't among my favourites because I have too many black shorts! Aaaah!
