The leagues of Fact and Fiction Unite
Opening night May 7, the prestigious Costume Institute revealed its secret identity at NYC’s famed Metropolitan Museum of Art. Descending upon New York, sometimes referred to as Metropolis and unveiling of the “Superhero’s: Fashion and Fantasy” Exhibit.
The concept is usually reserved for the geek boys of a Sci-fi and comic book convention, what made this exquisite show so chic is the high profile designers and technicians behind its creation.
Using some of the most recognised Costumes in the pop culture universe as a reference icons like Giorgio Armani, Thierry Mugler, Alexander McQueen and Jean Paul Gaultier contributed alternate wardrobes for the protectors of justice. Their muses included Spiderman, Superman, Batman, Iron man, Cat Woman, taking the established lines, symbols and colours of the suits and then morphing fabrics that crossover into the real world.
From a report in the Chicago Tribune:
"It's rather entertaining to consider superheroes" within the context of the museum that is "full of superheroes," said museum director Philippe de Montebello, noting that depictions of Hercules, Diana the Huntress and Perseus holding the head of Medusa are among the sculptures in the galleries of ancient art adjacent to the new costume exhibit.”
"Like their biblical and mythological ancestors, superheroes have been conduits for our hopes, dreams and desires," wrote Bolton in his introduction to the show. "But," he added, "superheroes should not be underestimated. Their apparent triviality is the very thing that gives them the ability to address serious issues of merit and worth, that frees them to respond to and comment upon shifting attitudes toward self and society, toward identity and ideology."
The Red Carpet affair attracted a myriad of celebrity presence, Co hosts George Clooney and Julia Roberts worked alongside Armani and Vogue Editor Anna Winotour. Also on the guest list Tom Cruise, David Beckham and Co who wore matching Armani suits. Sarah michelle Gellar, Christina Ricci and the Olsen twins also came out.
From an article in Elle UK:
“Karl Largerfeld was escorted by his date actress Diane Kruger, Eva Mendes attended with Calvin Klein's Creative Director Francisco Costa and Liv Tyler (both in Calvin Klein), Claudia Schiffer arrived in Valentino with Mr Valentino and a newly engaged Scarlett Johansson left fiance Ryan Reynolds at home for the night to party with her pals Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.”
