Style Wars (Part 1)
September 12th 2007 07:12
On a chilly spring evening at Melbourne Town Hall, teams from emerging local design houses gathered to display their wares on the catwalk. Sponsored by frankie magazine, Style Wars was described in the program as below:
In a galaxy comprised of laneways and 4-seasons in a day, a battle has been raging for the hearts and minds of Melbourne's style soldiers. These designers are fighting the good fight with their individual and unique collections, which have taken more than Melbourne by storm
Surrounded by young and fashionable people (even a row of girls in uniform on what appeared to be a school excursion!), we sat in the crowd and enjoyed the historical environ of Town Hall, with the juxtaposition on the catwalk of bleeding-edge fashion. The first collection to splash onto the stage was from TV. From design team Monika Tywanek and Ingrid Verner who met together at uni and have a background in art and design, they have a particular penchant for textiles and fabrics which is vividly reproduced in their range.
The collection included feminine pieces, with almost an art deco feel, a sprinkling of 80's sensibility and a bit of fun. Kicking off with a ruby pink silk pleated dress with a 20's vibe, and ending with a yellow knitted bodysuit with 3/4 length jacket cum cardigan, their range covers gear for a multitude of events. The stand outs were their grey bodysuit, their yellow dresses and an amazing black puff sleeve dress. On-trend for spring, geometric patterns were also used for dresses, teamed with leggings and yes, bike shorts.
My new favourite label, Alpha 60 was next on the menu, starting their parade with the motif on the big screen over the catwalk that would appear throughout the collection....Laura Palmer. Yes that's right, she of the "dead, wrapped in plastic" fame. Screaming class in monochromatic and neutral tones and balloon sleeve dresses fit for the red-carpet in futuristic fabrics; there was a definite sense of comfort and fun about this range.
With some yoke style collars (for women and men) over t-shirts, balloons met Twin Peaks and punk clashed with the 80's while the music matched the mood. There was a scribble-tastic black and white shirt dress with matching overnight bag which almost outdid the obscenely pretty tuxedo inspired mini-shift dress with the oversized peter pan collar. Casual and comfort fit tees with man-style pants, funky-as-hell sweaters for boys and pop culture motif skirt suits make these guys the label to watch.
Stay tuned for part 2 – including Claude Maus and Kate Hurst!

Are you interested in nominating a contender for the ALPHA male, looks like I'll have to fill in until the winner emerges.

How could anyone wear that on the streets? I would love to see them try though!

As in her face when she was found "wrapped in plastic"???
Love the yellow dress! I had a pinafore dress like that in hot pink when I was 13...way way way back when...
