Miley Cyrus goes short

It’s the U.S marketing Awards season again and this year the 50th Grammy Awards went all out to make sure that style ruled over substance. (Maybe a bit harsh, this years line up wasn’t as bad as some previous years.) “A salute to Fashion” within the show added extra glamour, glitz and shebang to the red carpet.

The pop star set got to exhibit there own labels with contributions from Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Sean Combs, Jay-Z and Jessica Simpson. The rest of the image conscious set went all out to attract attention there way with name brand designers draping or wrapping them in cloth.

Donning some beautiful, appalling and appealing wardrobe choices the first thing I noticed was the bright, bright colours and playful cuts. Sunglass demanding Yellow was Fergie’s choice, somehow I take her even less seriously now if that’s possible.

Blue was as in like lip synching a music video and Corinne Bailey Ray opted for sequins on royal blue, may look good on stage but not up close. A Blonde Nelly Furtardo also went blue sans shiny things, but wore it well in a flowing drape gown. Rihanna was a different kind of bold blue.

Alicia Keyes struck the heart chord in a deep, deep, dark blue gown.

Bai Ling went for an Irish casino kind of vibe, somehow it worked with the strong eye make up. On the Men’s side, looking smooth was John Legend in a tailored suit that sits like we all wish a classic style would.

Ode to an Italian Dress

DOlce and Gabbana Summer 08 PAINTED BLACK DRESS
All images from http://eng.dolcegabbana.it

Flamboyant and theatrical, Dolce and Gabbana’s Summer 2008 collection is indeed replete with works of art. From the hand-painted fabrics, the obsession with intricate embellishments and details to the matte velvet lips, D & G invoke a Keats-ian realm - instead of a Grecian urn, this is my ode to an Italian dress

The size of the size zero debate

September 27th 2007 07:25
The size zero debate is the new black, the latest fashion trend, which, like all fads, is probably not wise to buy (into) too much. I am not saying that the emaciated idealisation of the female body is not a problem, but that the media and public response is on the side of hysteria. For some perspective on my perspective, it should be known that I am not a size zero. I am not six foot tall, and I do not know anyone that has come under the attack of this new moralizing discourse.

Its the holy grail for every high street fashion chain boss - take the cream of the best catwalk designs from London, Paris, Milan and New York and turn them into speed chic, affordable fashion that flies off the shelves.

In the golden years of Haute Couture (1947-1957) Dior, Fath and Balenciaga had a one month publication ban on all images of their runway, as the exclusive sale of one calico toille to a Ready to Wear house was often enough to fund the beginnings of their next collection; Those caught sketching in public faced public prosecution. Today copying is rife, and it seems that not an Australian Fashion Week goes by without another young designer being accused by the media of copying

Johnny Cash's smooth tones provided the soundtrack to the Claude Maus range which was next to hit the catwalk at MMSFW Style Wars. A chic and stylish range in monochrome, the pieces catered for women as well as men who have a retro-Euro look in mind.

Ultra thin is not 'in' (LINK)

September 15th 2007 15:16
There was a time when a woman's wealth was recognized by her rubenesque figure. Today Paris Hilton lookalikes are revered and every womens magazine don't print without them. Governments around the world are now taking action to address the unrealistic body image expectations placed upon the worlds modelling industry. The Australian Fashion Council hosted a forum in March to discuss and debate whether or not industry guidelines are necessary to discourage the use of extraordinarily thin models on Australian runways and to ensure the health and wellbeing of Young Australians working as fashion models.

More importantly it raises the discussion that Designers and media have an ethical obligation to set the right role models for the youth of today

Tristan Blair - What Else! (LINK)

September 11th 2007 17:56
It's fair to say after trawling boutique after fabulous boutique in this beautiful city, there is noone aside from Massarro of course, who quite puts the same shine on a pair of shoes than Australian Designer Tristan Blair.

He is elusive, demure and completely humble about his creativity. I once attempted to help him source a shoe manufacturer in Brazil. He had become great friends with a man and his chicken in Bali and was loathe to change. Given my experiences in working with Brazilian timeframes I can understand why. Nothing quite happens fast enough in that country. Needless to say in a Summer that sports cotton candy and casual style you cant go past his new collection "Wonderful Armour
