Muriel's Rachel - Great Australian Talent!
July 26th 2007 07:02
Who could've guessed a role in 'Muriel's Wedding' back in 1994 would mark a new beginning for this remarkably talented Australian actress. And what a huge stepping stone it was for her, seeing that it sky-rocketed her somewhat humble career at the time into an international superstardom! Rachel Griffiths is the name, and she too, was amazed that her role as the adorable Rhonda Epinstalk in the comedy flick would eventually be adored by people in other continents.
I first got around too see her acting talent in the works when I watched the very first episode of ‘Six Feet Under’ on TV back in early 2001. Her role as Brenda Chenowith on the show was pretty much controversial from the very beginning, a rather genius but self-destructive woman dealing with problems that no ordinary woman could possibly imagine happening in one lifetime. It was easy for people to fall in love with the character as she was able to deal with her life’s struggles with the right amount of guts and grace, while at the same time keeping her quick-witted and funny persona on the side. To no surprise, she won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting actress in 2002.
Originally born in New Castle of New South Wales in 1968, she was actually raised in Melbourne by her art consultant mother and two older brothers. She would later earn her degree in Bachelor of Education for drama and dance at Victoria College, and then started her career as a member of a community theatre group called ‘Woolly Jumpers’ soon after. In 1991, she got her very first big break at the Melbourne International Film Festival as the creator and performer of ‘Barbie Gets Hip’.
Her critically acclaimed portrayal as Rhonda Epinstalk in ‘Muriel’s Wedding’ got her to receive awards from the ‘Australian Film Institute’ and ‘Australian Film Critics’ for Best Supporting Role. The movie was also responsible for giving the career of both Griffith and fellow co-star Toni Collette a boost after the movie received worldwide success.
Since then she has appeared in numerous films including the popular 1997 flick ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ co-staring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, ‘Blow’ with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz, ‘The Rookie’ alongside Dennis Quaid and to her most recent performance as Director Gordon in ‘Step Up’!
To be honest, I sort of knew that ‘Step Up’ was not the kind of movie I would normally watch. But since I heard Rachel Griffiths was in it, I decided to give it a go. Turned out.. the movie was great and entertaining, and Griffith’s character was also inspiring to watch!
Just so you know, she is adept at four different language accents.. Australian, English, American, and Welsh! This obviously helped her a lot during the 5 years of playing an American woman in ‘Six Feet Under’. She got married in 2002 to an Australian artist Andrew Taylor and they had two children since then, a son named Banjo Patrick and daughter Adelaide Rose.
Today you can see her on TV as Sarah Whedon in the ABC television drama series ‘Brothers and Sisters’! And by the way.. next time you see her in a movie, it’ll be great if you'd let me know. If perhaps I don’t get to find out about it myself, of course

She is a cool chick - a woman who stands by her convictions - like the time she turned up at the logies half naked to protest against....erm....what was it?
Great post!

I first saw her in Six Feet Under, where she was sex-obsessed. I was surprised to find out that she was Australian and was Fantastic! in Muriel's Wedding..

I've watched all the episodes so I remember clearly which phase of her character's life you were talking about. It was pretty much all over the second season in which her character Brenda had several encounters with different people throughout the several episodes. I admire Griffith's acting courage for that!
There were 3 more seasons after that though, that showed how her character grew to become a somewhat 'better' person.
Thanks for your comment, Cibbuano.
