Tee Off - how do I grab a great printed tee??
July 18th 2007 12:51
OK we could all make the easy choice; buy ourselves a second-hand "Iron Maiden" tee in order to bandwagon along with the latest celebrity fad. We could raid our boyfriends or husbands wardrobes and dig out those t-shirts they spare for painting the house, the ones that are stringy, falling apart, but read "For Those About To Rock...We Salute You" which make it a true accadacca gem.
Then again.....we could do the smart thing, the classy thing, indeed, the cool thing, and find a little tee niche that works for us. "How CC, how?" I hear you ask....well....here's how.
Firstly you work out what t-shirt fit is right for you. If you're fairly flat in the chest, you can get away with any fit or colour. For those with larger bosoms, we need to make sure we get a larger size, preferably with longer sleeves, but not big and man-shaped, still with a little curve. But please don't buy them if they turn your boobs into a barrel, and by god make sure if it's an original vintage with an old school transfer, don't stretch it beyond recognition.
You can choose the easy path. Rather than shopping vintage, go vintage copies. Heaps of sites around the globe are now reproducing classic styles for men and women. Some are charging high prices due to aforementioned current celebrity following, while others are more reasonable.
You may want to give the US based t-shirt.com a try for example, which ship internationally and have a massive range. There is some cool old ad t-shirts in wicked retro colours. For the Gen X-er's, there's Atari, Pac Man, A-Team and Karate Kid T's that will open a chat at your next party. There's even a "Save Ferris". Take you back? T-shirt.com also has a fantastic "Create your own" feature. This will allow you to invent your own one-of-a-kind printed tee. That's better than the celebrities, surely!?
Another awesome site is the more local online store located in Auckland, mrvintage.com. Again a substantial homage to this 80's trend relived, but also some kitsch and punk. Lots of these types of sites also cater to the kidult, with Sesame Street, Mr. Men, Care Bears and Jem prints (truly outrageous).
The other option is to choose one of the many new catchy designs from local up and comers. Alba Fan Club, the affordable Jeans West only range from the Ksubi dudes, have some cute and cheeky prints, as do Funkulo, Shona Joy and of course, Sass & Bide.
The easier way to ensure you're always right.....? A t-shirt for every day of the week. At mondaytofriday.com.au you can grab yourself a men's or women's T for each day of the week, in a different colour, stating the obvious, the day. Just don't get the mixed up or you could look like a dufus. Or perhaps that will be the new cool?
Ultimately you want to have something that you're not going to see everywhere, right? In that case, try 2x4tshirts.com which features limited edition t-shirts by current artists and designers. Decreases your chances of having that fashion scare of seeing someone in your clothes.
When spring comes along, this chilly weather blows north again, and you find yourself allowing your pale winter skin to be exposed, make sure you're funking it up in a sweet printed tee, jeans, some boots, and "oh this? I didn't even brush it!" hair.
