Pinup Girl Clothing

July 4th 2007 05:43
Website name: www.pinupgirlclothing.com
Location: US (Pasadena, CA)
Category: Retro - Clothing, Shoes, Swimwear, Accessories, Lingerie, Costumes and more
Rating: 4 out of 5 (Awesome range but site nav can be tricky)

Another long term e-commerce survivor, Laura Byrnes, a retro afficionado started this business in 1996 in California, hitting the web in 1999. Rather than risk stocking smelly or damaged vintage (which was also dwindling in numbers due to its popularity) she has decided to create a store of new clothes for people with a sensibility for fashion past.

"Unleash your inner babe" is right! The home page immediately entices you into a world when waists were cinched tight, and demure was sexy. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing conservative about this online store, they know how to vamp things up! The gorgeous tattooed pinups throughout will show you that.

As well as stocking their own brand, Pinup Girl Couture, these guys have some other well known US retro and hot rod style brands such as EC Star, Lucky 13, Sailor Jerry and Punkrose. There is an incredible variety to what you can buy here, and for someone like me, always something you MUST HAVE. Whether it be a pair of red peep toe wedges or a black silk dress from Trashy Diva, there are some positively steamy designs available.

The home page is, in my opinion, a little overloaded with information. Or at least it appears to be. Maybe it's just that the font is large, and the information is in large paragraphs, but it makes me want to skip to the good stuff. Plus there's a large amount of scrolling down necessary, and I'm an impatient user when it comes to too much mouse.

The site is however immediately easy on the eyes, and the picture links to navigate to their store contents are cute. I do find that once I am within a section, it's a little hard to tell if I've hit the end of the "link line" or whether I keep going. It's important to read the links, and note that often the pages are not contained within the usual screen size (again, scrolling is necessary at times).

PUG Clothing has a Search function which works very effectively. If you wanted to find a cherry bikini, some black pumps or a boy beater tee, it's very simple to do so, and there is an indication on items found with the most matches which is handy.

One of the best things about the brands stocked at this site is the fact that they cater for bigger chicks like me. These styles are some of the most flattering to any shape, but particularly the more buxom of us. Nothing says confidence like a curve hugging black pencil skirt or a femme fatale red wiggle dress!

Once you do work your way through, and you make your purchase(s), it is a straightforward transaction. You can even use PayPal which I found very handy, and they definitely ship internationally (thank goodness!). They have specials from time to time which are of exceptional value. You would be hard pressed finding some of this gear in stores in Australia anywhere near the cost of conversion plus postage. These guys pride themselves on their fast delivery too.

Laura and her team do a great deal in promoting the pin up girl photography industry in the US. Often they feature many of the better known pin ups on the site, such as Masuimi Max, Sabine Kelly and the recent America's Next Top Model reject, Micheline Love.

PUG have a regular newsletter you can sign up for. It's a blog based email which shows you their latest arrivals, recent news and often links to video interviews and other cute bits and pieces. You can also add them as a friend on your MySpace, and search eBay for excess or sale stock.

Once you buy from Pinup Girl Clothing you get let in on a little secret. I can't tell you but I can let you know it's a good thing if you want to go back and buy more.

And trust me, you will....

Great first post on Fashion.org.au, Angela!

I think a lot of online shoppers will benefit from your reviews

Cool post pinup vixen. There used to be a fantastic shop in Manly of all places called Glamourpuss who sold drop-dead gorgeous bags from vintage fabrics and va-va-voom dresses but Sam has sold it. I'm not sure if she's still running her online store.

Long story short I'm glad you found me a new supplier.

Thanks Fashionista!

Glamourpuss exists now in Erskineville and still in the online world. It's one of my favourite places in the whole wide world.....agree completely. I think Sam still owns it though? Maybe you know some insider goss?

I've got HEAPS of Retro and Vintage site reviews coming up soon.

Thanks for your support!

No, I thought Glamourpuss was finished when she went off to have a baby (v. cute hubby). Thanks for the tip, I'll have to pop in.

I'm sure I'll be swinging by again soon.

Also they have free international shipping for orders over $250 which I have never seen at any other US website.

Thanks for pointing that out "anonymous", I meant to include that detail in my post. Oops!

The recommendation there would be to shop with a bunch of girlfriends so you can all qualify for free shipping together (if you're struggling to make the $250 alone!).
