Staples: Boots

The story with boots this winter is a varied and confusing one for those invested in trends. Plenty of antipathy abounds towards ankle boots due in part to the use and abuse of said item in the 80s but I think there’s plenty of good versions, you just have to look. This Burberry boot is an example of what not to wear, the quasi-cowboy top and slick patent combine to create a sick hybrid of confused trends.
The knee high boot is hardly about to pass from fashion and were I to put money down for which boot will best stand the test of time it would always be the knee high. Which is not to say that things can’t go wrong with this style, the scrunchy cheap leather version is not ok. The stretch material form has its time and place but the classic dark leather incarnation like this Chloe boot is your best bet. Particulalry in Sydney’s climate, knee-highs facilitate stockingless wear with skirts, can lengthen and flatter a less-slender build and can convey the wearer from work to evening with ease.
If you have some money sloshing around I think nothing screams wealth like red leather Jimmy Choos with a gold plated heel. They’re the kind of item I can imagine Carrie Bradshaw working beautifully, traipsing along some Manhattan street at 4am with a delightful gentleman on her arm.
At this juncture I think it would be safest to avoid the bootie so recently championed by Louis Vuitton inter alia. No doubt they will return at some point but that sort of disproportion only sticks around for a season or so I think that season has come and gone.
To recap, in the upcoming sales it’s always worth angling for the knee high in a more traditional form. Aside from the benefits of being able to convey oneself by foot from one place to another, they just look good.
