Patch Things Up!
July 17th 2007 11:49
Continuing along the current ultra-feminine trend is the recent resurgence in patchwork dresses. Traditionally (and for some people this still remains the case) the realm of hippies, designers are now looking to the traditional arts and crafts of quilting and appliqué for their latest inspiration.
Rumoured to have derived out of necessity from various pieces of leftover material by post WWII seamstresses, the style was created to form a new dress from mix and match pieces in a suitable way. Drawing on the art of quilting, the patchwork dress was thus created.
During its revival in the 60's, this hippie staple was truly born. With the various mixes of the new prints like paisleys and brocades, it became a form of self-expression and an indication of peaceful rebellion.
Like all fashion, when it's adapted by the masses and becomes commonplace, the patchwork dress during the late 70's had become passé and mostly used for maternity wear.
The reappearance of the patchwork trend surfaced during the Spring / Summer 07 Ready To Wear collections of the likes of Marc Jacobs, Sonia Rykiel and Anna Sui.
Of course there are many second-hand or vintage styles available on eBay or sites such as enokiworld.com. You do have to choose your cuts and colours carefully though, as depending on your age, size and accessories, this style can be folklore frump if caution is not exercised.
With avant-garde designers such as Marnie Skillings and Duro Olowu following suit with this floral festival in fashion, be sure to see it hit Aussie stores and sites for our Spring. Match it with a great pair of floppy tan boots, some shoulder dusters with long loose curls and you'll be the September spring stunner!
