Five Most Overrated Fashion Icons

October 16th 2006 10:29
In honour of the recent upsurgence of celebrities as so-called fashion icons, including Nicole Richie on the cover of Vogue Italia's October 2006 issue and Paris Hilton on the cover of the Vogue Paris November 2006 issue, I've compiled a list of the five most overrated fashion icons in my humble opinion...

Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan

I know, I know...how ridiculous that I could even consider Lindsay Lohan a fashion icon! Well I have to concede that she's pretty fanatical about fashion and can get it right at times, but my goodness, how does she manage to dress so poorly? The outfit above is atrocious. When worn alone, I'd probably love the blue lacy dress, brown leather military jacket, or brown riding boots, but together, they're a poor effort. She seems to have a knack for picking awesome pieces and putting them together badly.

Sienna Miller

I thought Sienna Miller looked so original and inventive this time last year, but I think her fashion sense has really plummeted since then as she's looking quite sketchy these days.

Ashley Olsen

I don't have anything particularly against what Ashley wears, but I feel that she's a bit of an impersonator when it comes to fashion. See this post for an obvious example of Ashley imitating one of Kate Moss' lovely outfits.

Nicole Richie

When Nicole Richie first started wearing Rachel Zoe's outfits, I thought they were so original! Now I find that Rachel's recycling the same looks between clients and to be honest, I think they're boring. I hate to admit it, but I believe Rachel Zoe's style is fading, and consequently Nicole Richie's bought 'style' is suffering too.

Paris Hilton

Why is she on the cover of Vogue Paris? WHY?! Her 'style' is wearing pyjamas in public. Yes, she makes them look pretty, but that hardly qualifies her as a fashion icon.

I agree with all of those!!! How come Mary-Kate isn't up there too though? Aren't her and Ashley one in the same? Or is Mary-Kate actually a trust worthy fashion icon, while her sister is not?

I hate them all... I think part of the problem is that they get in the public eye and feel that they have to constantly be original... so they end up wearing thrown together outfits in the interest of being unique.

Aaron, have you seen pics of MK and Ashley together? They have extreeeeemely different styles. MK puts her outfits together in a really eclectic way (which many people dislike but I love), whereas Ash's outfits always look so familiar (and that's because they've already been done to death). I really shouldn't pay her out so much because admittedly she does look great a lot of the time, I just feel she lacks originality, which I believe is a distinguishing quality of a fashion icon.

Cibby I actually think originality is great in fashion but it should be effortless...the starlets above just try too hard and don't really 'own' their styles. In the case of Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, they've literally borrowed some effortless chic from Rachel Zoe!

ha ha i love it. You know who you left out though, MISHA BARTON! Sometimes, read SOMETIMES, the girl gets it right on the red carpet but catch her on the pavement and she often looks like a real dag. More importantly, what's up with her zoolander-eque ability to only make one pouty, not-so-cute-no-matter-what-angle-its-at face?!

Joanna, i agree with the constant pout. ugh. MK&A do it too.

but i actually think Mischa's style is cute, even though she shares the same stylist as Lindsay and Nicole. she really pulls off all the outfits she wears because they're more distinctly 'her', whereas Lindsay and Nicole just look like clones. sorry

Thank you!
I have never quite understood why Sienna Miller is considered a fashion...no...style icon. She's cute and funky (and apparently in the pits in Pittsburgh...) and fashionable but she's not stylish. She's been styled...as have Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Ritchie and ilk.

I also don't quite get why Kate Moss is such a style icon. Oooh, I can feel the stilettos in my back. She's a model guys...not a role model. It's her job to look fashionable.

Gwen Stefani may look like she put on her entire wardrobe (plus her Harajuku girls wardrobes) but she's got style. All her own.
Umm...damn, fashion block, can't think of anyone else right now with original style. Original good style...because Bjork has original style, as does Cher...

You know...most of these celeb girls/women look good, most of the time. They should. They have access to vintage shops and trendy markets all over the world! Plus all those little designers who keep throwing their clothes at them...sigh...

What I don't get is when they get it wrong. Not when they're just doing their thing, hanging with their friends and the papparazzi, but when they're at a red carpet event, etc.
Think:
Gwyneth Paltrow in that Goth Horror
Uma Thurman in that Milk Maid in hell dress
Nicole Kidman in anything pale
Sienna Miller in anything Kate Moss wore first

Who let them go out like that??

"Sienna Miller in anything Kate Moss wore first"

I agree with that sooo bad!!!

DuskDevi I guess everyone has different taste in fashion...so Goth Horror Gwyneth, Milk Maid Uma, etc may have genuinely thought they looked fabulous, and those dresses may even make them style icons to some people out there! Fashion is so subjective...for example, Kate Moss is my all time ultimate style icon, but clearly you don't rate her that highly hehe...each to their own I guess!!

im NOT a fan of marykate OR mischa barton. all the hype with her looking so beautiful: shes not beautiful when shes roaming the streets without makeup, shes really very VERY plain.
marykate... i just do NOT get the whole boho thing; she looks like a homeless person 99% of the time because shes literally swimming around in too much fabric. as a result i think ashley (despite the recylcling of outfits) inevitably looks like a more normal person

my personal hate: chloe sevigny. ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh. and oh, ugh.

Hi Sisi...Sorry...I do sound like I'm all Judge-Your-Ass-Style-Police!

What I meant was, these women are considered style icons, usually they look stunning in whatever they wear and for them to get it "wrong" (which is, as you say, subjective)...can only mean that they've doubted themselves and entrusted a stylist. Who secretly hates them!

Think of the public bashing they got by the fashion media, actually also by BBC, CNN and other 'prestigious' forms - hypocrisy at it's finest because previous years (and I do believe they 'dressed' themselves) Uma was a Goddess in Prada, Nicole and her bright Galiano gowns, Gwyneth in her classic pieces, Sienna in something Kate hasn't worn (that would be a tyre).

So these women know what looks good on them, the variations on their 'look', the different looks they can get away with, they know what they get praised for and even if you would not emulate their style, you can admire it.

Screen Goddesses know that they are the trendsetters, the Alphas of the Fashion World
(Alphashionistas??)
So when they get publicly ridiculed for what they thought looked good when NORMALLY their choices are
held in high regard... someone lied to them.

Oh man...who'd want to be famous?

Comment by Sisi

October 17th 2006 11:34
Haha yeh I get you DuskDevi! I think it can be a case of experimenting gone wrong...celebrities do know that they're trendsetters and they know that their style needs to evolve accordingly otherwise they can be labelled as being in a fashion rut by the ruthless media...so I guess there's a lot of pressure on them to modify their look every so often and branch out a little. You're right though, some of them should just stick to what they know works...but the ones who can successfully change their looks from time to time are more often than not the true style icons in my opinion (like Kate Moss! haha).
PS I want to be famous! LOL

I reckon Victoria Beckham deserves an honorary mention on that list! I've got nothing against her nor am I going to hound her for her Spice Girls days, but some of the stuff she wears....ugh!!

Super mini hot pants and tops two sizes too small does NOT look good on a somewhat anorexic frame!!!

October 20th 2006 03:11
Sorry charles, I love her style so she's not getting a mention haha. However, I will concede that she's gotten quite skinny...

Comment by charles

October 20th 2006 04:16
Perhaps I conveyed myself incorrectly. She's certainly got style, but whether or not some of the stuff she wears is appropriate for her skinny body is a different matter! hehe!

It's really only her choice of casual wear I'm ranting about. Normally, she does look quite resplendent at A-list events etc.

Charles.

That's a fair point charles...though she's rarely in casual wear so it doesn't bother me

Finally someone else who also thinks Sienna Miller is overrated. I'm sick of hearing what a style icon she is.
And those Olsen twins are always ripping off someone elses style. There's a Kate Hudson outfit (in jeans, t-shirt and men's style hat) that one of those twins have copied down to the last thread. You're worth zillions, get some style.

And I'm so over Rachel Zoe. She's just making every tiny starlet in Hollywood look exactly the same!!!

I know quite a few people who think Sienna's overrated, so you're not alone KylieW And I agree about Rachel Zoe...her only client who doesn't appear to be conforming completely to the Zoe 'uniform' is Mischa Barton

poor girls!! let them wear want they want to wear!
damn, what would people say about YOUR style if they snap you running out one morning to buy bread and milk. Celebs dress up on the red carpet to get noticed, then you can judge and comment all you want, but please, let them live their lives. "Get your own life" sounds harsh, so I wont say it. laters.

most people writing on her seem to forget that these stars have stylist dressing them most of their daily lives. I think they have also shown that they are human and can get the styling wrong from time to time and its ok to dress a little bit weirder (or have gotten the fashion style of the times wrong) than that of the next person...
