My beautiful mommy (thanks to plastic surgery)

There's a lot of fury on the web at this self-published book by Michael Salzhauer, a Florida plastic surgeon, who realized that kids are going to be confused when their mother's come home from a 'day at the spa' with big, firm, non-milk producing breasts and a facial expression that doesn't change, even when she scolds her child.
Newsweek published the story, going into details about the book and casting it in an unfavourable air. Naturally, bloggers have picked up on the story, venting their anger at our crass, superficial culture by writing scathing blog posts, then sitting back and waiting for the greenbacks to roll in.
Of course, there's a real angle to this... Nielsen Hayden points out that the book is published on a vanity press, meaning the good doctor funded the printing of this book, he sells it himself and it'll probably make no money.
Still, do children need a book like this?
Personally, I'm of the opinion that if kids had more books on not judging themselves based on appearances, then perhaps fewer future mothers would feel like getting plastic surgery.
But then again, what do I know? If mothers feel that childbirth left them with a ravaged body and want to restore themselves, is it so bad? I don't know. After all, I'm one of those people that Florida doctors would consider a prime target for cosmetic surgery, except for my empty wallet. Ha ha!

I will say there is something in modifying our appearance to feel better about ourselves. We do it every day, even in the most basic ways - how we style our hair, the care we take in dressing, wearing makeup and jewellery - that lifts our self esteem and make us feel more confident.
But this book is something else. It's simplifying something, and spelling it out to a child in the wrong way. "Mummy had you, then she felt she looked ugly because her boobs weren't as perky and her stomach not as flat, so now she is undergoing serious surgery to make everything better".
It's sending the wrong message, and it disgusts me. I think what Rove pointed out was right - what impact is saying that you are having surgery because you are ugly and unhappy that your body has gotten bigger going to have on a child, who is constantly growing bigger?
I foresee more kids becoming anorexic to fight off puberty, more young girls enhancing the sexual aspects of their bodies before they should, and general problems with selfesteem facing the next generation if this is the kind of shit they grow up hearing.

As for the book, I think kids are pretty clued up, my Mum had a nose job when i was ten, now i joke all the time that I need to get mine done as I have my mother's nose..., ill never do it, largely because she HATED her new nose so, i have seen the error of her ways,.... and she maintains she had it done because she broke it and also almost died on the operating table just quietly.
