Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week
September 10th 2007 02:47
I'm ba-ack! Sorry to anyone who missed me writing posts last week. I know there might be 1 or 2 anyway.....
The weather was a little cooler than Sydney (and can I just say how much Sydney comes alive in Spring - the gentle breezes, the scent of blossoming jasmine.....it reminds me why I'm still here!). It was however mostly sunny....which is a lovely change for Melbourne.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those Sydney-philes who pooh-poohs Melbourne the first chance I get. No siree. I absolutely adore Melbourne. I head there probably around 2 to 3 times a year. It's like going to Europe but a lot cheaper, and I don't have to worry about the exchange rate when I rack up thousands on the plastic. Customer service and therefore shopping is an art form in Melbourne, and alongside shopping comes Fashion, where Melbourne thoroughly excels.
Not just the designers either. Your general young-un knows how to dress. Sydney has 'must-have' items in order for you to be considered part of the elite set. It's like a secret code that if you know it, or you're wearing it, then you must be cool. Melbourne is exactly the opposite. There's no uniform, in fact they relish individuality and self-expression. This is not isolated to fashion but extends to all of the arts; theatre, dancing, illustration and of course comedy. It's a thriving artistic metropolis that encourages risk and is fully supported through their community. Sorry Sydney, but you are the antithesis of this.
The fact that fashion week (MMSFW) was open to the public, and had so many events to attend only supports this argument. A wannabe fashionista like me could attend the evening parades, see exhibitions, 'wearable art' walks, and learn how to make an obi at Kimono House, most of which were free or most certainly affordable. For everyone that is. Which means that even at the evening fashion parades, there were rows of young girls who were design students, or just interested to see what's happening and to feel part of it.
MMSFW's philosophy is not about fashion being something 'exclusive' but quite the opposite. Everyone is welcome, and in my opinion, since we all wear clothes, that's how it should be. I'm fed up with hoighty-toighty fashion types making the rest of us feel like it's beyond our reach. That cool is something you can only earn or buy. Some people just are cool. I guess the unfortunate side of fashion, being an 'external' art form, it attracts all elements and particularly those of the superficial kind.
I had a wonderful week. My posts this week will be all kinds of reviews from last week. I'll be covering the Style Wars fashion parade that some of you may have read about in the press. I'll be looking at Drawn to the Stage which was an exhibition at the Arts Centre on costume design. After seeing the Guggenheim exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, I also went to the Super Bodies exhibition which looks at the super hero influence on 80's fashion. Then we'll see what was in store at the Penthouse Mouse set up in an abandoned warehouse for young emerging designers to show their wares.
What fun! Glad to see you all again!
Hope to see you the rest of the week too.....

I really like Melbourne too -- wouldn't mind a couple of years there myself
Really like the image you've put up.

Maybe I'll see you there next time Kylie!
Melbourne is just lovely Lara. If Sydney ever had an event like this I wonder whether it would be successful....?
Thanks for popping in lovelies!
