After six years away from the London catwalks, Luella returned with a collection that oozed retro femininity and style. Florals and frills, tulle and lace made for an absolutely pretty return to fashion week, as seen below in pictures from SMH.

A week earlier in New York (where apparently it is now the norm to invite fashion bloggers! - over 40 were requested to attend - if only it were like that at Rosemount Aust FW!!!) Betsey Johnson unleashed her new range inspired by the 'prom'. Featuring hints of retro, more tulle and a load of vibrant colours, the Spring 08 collection included cute jumpsuits and incredible red-carpet worthy creations.

Back to London, for fashion week according to an article in the SMH, in an effort to prevent eating disorders amongst the profession as well as the wider community, the Model Health Inquiry set up in March is suggesting "health certificates" from doctors which would be presented to their agencies. In addition, they suggest that no-one under 16 should be able to do catwalk modelling, as well as a full ban on size zero models. I think most of us would agree that's a step forward, no?

A couple of days later, Naomi Campbell has responded negatively, simply saying that it's "unfair". A lot of the controversy has been heightened by the debate back here in Oz, over Maddison Gabriel, now 13, whom the Prime Minister had determined as too young to hit the catwalks and be a model.

What do you guys think?

I LOVE Betsey Johnson!...have a few dresses that are heading towards vintage classification...

As for Naomi...I think her drug use has addled her brain. I read that article and her reasons for are just pathetic.
I also just read somewhere that she's bitching about British Vogue not using her on their cover but from all accounts she's been on their cover almost 10 times.

As for this whole U16 thing...it's 'considered' hard to judge because some of these girls look like they're over 18...with look being the key word.

15yo?...maybe they're 'ready'. Maybe not? But 12/13...no.

Is a 12yo girl really capable of withstanding the reality of a very fickle fantasy world? At an age where self esteem is already very fragile...

Does anyone remember the name of that 8yo Australian girl who was 'sexed up' for the cameras? I think she's still modelling, she might be 12 now...There was this shot of her heavily made-up with a pout. It was and is extremely disturbing.

Then there's Milla Jovovich who started modelling when she was 11. I remember (oh God I'm old) a 60 Minutes story on her and her sexy photos...the reporter asked her if she knows what sexy meant and she thought it meant being naked and she was disgusted that anyone would think she's sexy.

Yes...girls have changed since then. For all of Milla's 'grown-up' looks, she was still fairly innocent and unfortunately girls today have bypassed the innocent phase and gone straight to 'sin-nocence'...or am i just being sin-ical?

Unfortunately...from my soapbox...it just seems to me that Maddison's mother is leading a vicarious life through her daughter. She thinks it's okay because her daughter is 5'7" and fits in to womens clothes???

At 14, my daughter was already 6 foot (she's 17 now) and wore womens size 10 clothes and yes I'm biased but she is stunning.
What really got me...and surprisingly her as well...is how everyone assumed she wants to be a model or that she should model. She wants to be a vet.

AND...what i truly do not understand is how a 12/13yo is going to make me -an almost 40yo-want to buy the clothing she is modelling?

COMMENTUS INTERRUPTUS!...we did it again Chic!...

..and I really should stop anyway...not sure if I've made any sense so I will probably edit this comment afterwards...

hugs hon...

hey there katyzzz - the pink ruffle is very cute isn't it?!

Dusky - we did do it again! Weird..... Your comments are valid and you are too youthful to have a 17yo daughter!!! I'll bet she is gorgeous, and it just goes to show how good her mum has brought her up if she wants to be a vet instead of a model

Cheers for stopping by you guys!

Dusk I completely agree!! I've heard many argue that models such as Linda Evangelista, Gisele Bundchen, and Christy Turlington all started very young, and may not have had such successful careers if they had waited, but I think it should be pointed out that in the rest of the world, particularly London and Europe, a lot of girls start their modelling careers at around 14 or 15, but in Australia girls start modelling a lot older, so it's not as if she would be missing out if she were to wait a few years.

It seems everytime a 12 or 13yo achieves something in connection to Modeling it is compared in the Media to past issues on anorexia and the high fashion catwalk scene. The fact is this is a Contest Win and the opportunity for this young lady to progress within age appropriate environments and work with the support of her Parent.

14yo Monika Jagaciak progressed well in Modelling, at 13yo Camila Finn was discovered by Ford Models, Adriana Lima began at 13, I believe Daniela Borges was also 13 and Daniela Cott had a ‘Real Life’ rags to riches story when she was discovered at age 14. So why the issue with Maddison? Australia it seems has a problem with this.

I am never ceased to be amazed at how people can confuse teens modeling with the problems caused by High Fashion Designers and Top Fashion Magazines like Vogue who previously encouraged images of unrealisticly thin models. In a world where Child Obesity and Kids going off the rails are issues, we should be encouraging the enthusiastic young talents who wish to progress, surely it is no different to those who aspire to be Gymnasts? If the background environments within Top Modeling is an issue then surely it is for the industry to clean up it’s act and not just ban youngsters.

In addition I also see many many youngsters paying to join so called online Talent Profile sites placing the minimum of info and expecting to become a star without any input, some of these youngsters are unsupervised on the net and in their hurry to be a Model or a Disney Star they actually place personal contact information in the forums, now I consider that more of a scary issue than that of Maddison Gabriel.
