Lee Mathews Workroom, Bondi Junction

On Oxford Street in Bondi Junction the other day, I noticed a boutique shop called Lee Mathews Workroom. It first caught my eye because of the unique layout and interesting window displays. I soon discovered that, although this shop has only been open for 5 months now, Lee Mathews first opened her workroom in Newport, NSW in 2002, which is where most of the magic happens.
The style of the clothing is feminine and romantic, and every piece demonstrates attention to detail and self-expression. There is a clear link in her designs to her inspirations; antique buttons, Victorian postcards, luscious fabrics and much more. Fabrics are mostly hand dyed, and some are finished off with handmade details and additions. The garments show an appreciation of traditional craft methods.
All Lee Mathews clothing is made in Australia, and has a uniquely Australian style. Garments are made mostly from natural fibres and most can be layered under one another. The range at the moment is trans-seasonal as it combines long and short-sleeved basics with soft, floaty skirts and dresses, and a variety of accessories including sandals, belts and trinket necklaces. And because the garments are so carefully made and handled along the way, two items never really are the same.
Her inspiration from the 20’s and 30’s is apparent in the homely interiors of the store. The shop floor is covered in polished yet rough looking floorboards, there are also old signs and posters on the walls and at the counter, and garments hang on wooden ladders in the middle of the room.
In addition to her Newport and Bondi Junction Workrooms, Lee Mathews clothing is stocked at Belinda stores, Husk in Melbourne, Scotties in New Zealand and Iris and Hazel in Paddington.
