Jaakan: Melbourne's sultry little secret
June 21st 2007 00:10
Up and coming Melbourne label Jaakan has only been around for a few seasons but already their favouring of beautiful fabrics and playful attention to detail has made me quite a fan. And yes, their logo is of a little boy peeing - a satirical contrast to their clothes which, despite a cheeky sense of humour are still not quite so crude. There is no mention of the inspiration for this logo on their website but luckily for the conscience of the average inner-city pinko leftie (guilty as charged) they refuse to use sweatshop labour.
So, to the clothes. Last year I bought this dress and when I wear it people tend to comment on the maid aspect. Yes it is a black wool waisted dress with cream broderie anglaise borders with a big bow at the back but it’s also remarkably flattering. The fabric is a beautiful wool and details such as the cut of the sleeves and flare of the skirt separate it from your usual little black dress. And really, don’t we just wear clothes to receive comments?
Also from last winter is this blue number, somewhat similar in shape but altogether different in tone and flavour. I’m guessing this is an example of vintage fabric sourced by the designers not only as a nod to individuality but also an expression of old-style quality.
Summer 06/07 was retro-styled, take this beach frolic for example. Unfortunately their website doesn’t have images of Winter 07 so I can’t show you. I can only suggest that you keep an eye out for these beauties, as I imagine they will flourish in the future.
