Fashion for a Song
The inevitable symbiosis between the worlds of music and fashion exploded in the last century. Establishing dominance in the 1960’s the two industries have fed off each others energies for publicity nourishment.
Marilyn Monroe’s classic Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes shows the costumed nature of the business spread into all avenues of popular entertainment.
The union now culminated in the annual celebration known as Fashion Rocks (You can read my post about this years gala by clicking HERE)
Before even designer labels became chic Jazz and blues musicians used to add sequined beads of clothing and jewellery to the lyrics in their songs. Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and many others from the era had hits singing about the glamorous high life and the prestigious clothes that can be acquired through wealth.
To list all the songs that deal with fashion or mention clothing as a form of personal expression would be futile. Instead the list below represents a selection of tunes I personally enjoy. (That why things like Madonna’s Material Girl and Vogue are not included.)
