In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.

These days, the majority of designer handbags are made from leather, primarily created from cow hides, but also from skins of lamb, kangaroo, deer, ostrich, snake, eel, and even sting ray. I don't blame those designers either - the butter-soft feel of a leather clutch in your hand or a tote on your shoulder is, in my opinion, unrivalled by any other material. Woven leather can be made into an entire bag, or simply helps with accenting, as seen on the handles of the Fendi Spy Satchels. The great thing about leather bags is that they don't become stiff in winter, so a soft, unstructured leather hobo will retain its flexibility all year round. The bag below is by Bisonte, an Australian manufacturer of leather garments and accessories:
