Blame Carrie Bradshaw and her Patricia Field Sex and the City ways, but it seems that the spring trend from the Northern Hemisphere is set to make its way down under. A more streamline and elegant alternative to the hobo and the tote bags we’ve seen lately, introducing the new day clutch

Snatch-proof handbags

June 18th 2007 00:59
Having had a handbag snatched off my person on Cleveland Street last year I’ve been a little more wary of this particular fashion accessory. After all, I not only lost the bag (beautiful black leather with pink and white candy striped lining) but worst of all my notebook! Thankfully, designers this year have taken this general concern into account with the inclusion of the detachable shoulder strap. So when walking through a dodgy part of the city you can sling your sac around your body in an effort to prevent further heartbreak (and lost genius in the form of moleskines.)

In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.

French, a singer and daughter of Serge, Charlotte Gainsbourg had to be gorgeous. Obviously inheriting more of her actress/model mother's (Jane Birkin of Hermes Birkin bag fame) looks than her brooding crooner dad. Recently she gained greater Australian exposure in The Science of Sleep, starring alongside Gael Garcia Bernaz as a Parisienne neighbour gradually drawn into a world of fantasy and phantasm. As you can see in this picture there was minimal attention paid to her hair and makeup, her wardrobe was dowdy and still she radiates beauty.

After visiting the Victoria and Albert exhibition which travelled to the National Gallery in Canberra a few years ago, I’ve been obsessed with Vivienne Westwood. It’s not just that she’s sixty and has a beautiful thirty-year-old Italian lover, although that does impress me, and it’s not just that she’s been an inspiration for generations of fashionistas, mostly it’s because for Westwood, fashion is thought

One of the most striking models of the contemporary brat pack is Jessica Stam, a statuesque Canadian who has the kind of natural physique required for catwalk shows. She is indeed long and slender but there is nothing painful about the proportions of her legs or the position of her clavicle. My general rule is that if the knee is wider than the thigh there’s a problem but Stam is in proportion as you can see from the Stella McCartney show.

Although Coco Chanel was really the first to bring the black dress into the everyday wardrobe of the modern woman, its place was indeed cemented with Hepburn’s appearance in Givenchy during Breakfast at Tiffany (see Sisi's post) last year for more on that dress

I love Marc Jacobs

May 21st 2007 00:22
What I really wish I had right now is the entire Marc Jacobs Fall 2007 Ready to Wear Collection. So rarely do I view a collection and consider that not only would I wear just about every piece therein but would look exquisite, savvy and elegant in the process. This collection is a sort of blend of Gatsby-esque 20s chic and slender 70s day-wear. Jacobs manages to create a collection so rich in detail and pleasurable in palate that I just want to eat it all up.

Oh Louis, why???

March 21st 2007 04:56
Occasionally a designer will “design” (and I use the term loosely) something that will really grind my gears, something that makes me shake my head and think “why in the world would anyone spend thousands of dollars on that??”

The latest to do just that was Marc Jacobs (who I usually love) for Louis Vuitton with his East West Tati bag pictured below (pictures are courtesy of Style.com) from the Spring 2007 Ready-To-Wear collection

Leather Goods

April 24th 2006 12:18
I've noticed a recent increase in the variety of leather goods sported by celebrities and people on the street, possibly due to the fact that the amount of attention I've paid to the luxurious material has increased as my personal love for it has swelled, but most likely attributed to its surge in popularity. I wouldn't call leather a trend, since it is a timeless and universal entity in fashion, but I can't ignore its current popularity, so here's to leather! *clink*

Bags - Don't ever start a conversation with me about leather bags. I'll never let it end. These days, the majority of designer handbags are made from leather, primarily created from cow hides, but also from skins of lamb, kangaroo, deer, ostrich, snake, eel, and even sting ray. I don't blame those designers either - the butter-soft feel of a leather clutch in your hand or a tote on your shoulder is, in my opinion, unrivalled by any other material. Woven leather can be made into an entire bag, or simply helps with accenting, as seen on the handles of the Fendi Spy Satchels. The great thing about leather bags is that they don't become stiff in winter, so a soft, unstructured leather hobo will retain its flexibility all year round. The bag below is by Bisonte, an Australian manufacturer of leather garments and accessories:
