What Ruberry Boots you have!
July 20th 2007 02:03
When Kate first appeared in gumboots, wellies or rubber boots, whatever you like to call them, we all thought it was a bit posey. OK, it was practical. Glastonbury is messy and very muddy. But the general consensus throughout the media was that she was on drugs. We didn't know then what we know now (much as we might have suspected it).
We all thought about it a little longer, we started seeing the designers creating patterned versions, we all decided they were incredibly practical, now we all want a pair. Heck, some of you are even wearing them to work on casual Fridays!
Along come some sensible designers to change the humble welly into a must-have fashion item. Especially given the weeks of downpour we've had in various parts of Australia lately. I grew up with gumboots, but they were plain, black, and nothing special. Nowadays you can make a true rubber statement with your choice of booty. Sorry, boot.
Of course the home of the welly is the UK. The original creators are now home to some of the coolest designs around. www.wellieart.co.uk has a massive range of boots, in all kinds of colours and styles. You can grab a pair for the whole family, from long-time boot label Tretorn (who have been making them since 1891 - yes, 1891!) in cool designs, white with "pinups", black ankle style, pink, red....you name it, they have it.
Closer to home, you can try pipduck.com.au who also stock the famous Tamara Henriques and Ilse Jacobsen boots. Tamara is known for the feminine and fashionable styles, and come in a range of patterns and colours. Ilse Jacobsen creates the amazing lengthy lace up style, similar to those seen on Gwynnie (if not the same!) at Glastonbury.
Tamara Henriques has even gone so far as to create the "rain shoe". A ballet flat shoe made purely from rubber. An awesome idea to be able to prevent the puddles from staining our leather, whilst still being able to look pretty and petite in the feet.
So all hail (sorry about the weather pun) the humble welly, which through clever design and manipulation of rubber has become a must-have during rainy weather. Or muddy, or overcast....actually you could probably wear them when it's sunny too....down the park....
Ah, you get the idea.

You've got to make sure that you are OK with getting your gummies muddy. That's what they're for!! I can't imagine spending $700 and then feeling OK with that!
