Gladiator Sandals

It always makes me happy to write a post for a reader, so when my Orble colleague Couch Pumpkin gave me a mission today, I enthusiastically accepted. It just so happens that gladiator sandals are very much the "it" shoe at the moment. Once worn by Russell Crowe lookalikes of the Roman era, gladiator sandals have returned as the most fashionable form of footwear for summer. So what are the best ways to wear them?
Gladiator sandals look really groovy with short shorts for a casual day outfit (for those of you at university, this is perfect!). It's such a rockin' look summer-wise, and the vests/waistcoats add an interesting extra layer without being too hot.
For slightly chillier weather, gladiator flats with a long oversized sweater like Lindsay's tucked into shorts looks so hot and funky and is wearable both day and night, so you don't have to change like Lindsay's done here (well I'm assuming the clothes she's carrying are a change).
I love love love gladiators with a sexy goddess dress like this one and a soft leather clutch - the perfect outfit for a night out clubbing, and you can dance the night away without your feet hating you!
For those of you who are a little more modest, try wearing a sleeveless shift dress with gladiator sandals and big sunglasses for a classy Jackie O look. In fact, I'm a huge fan of most dresses wtih gladiator flats. However, I think they should either be mini or just below knee length. Knee length skirts and dresses are hard to pull off with gladiators for some reason, possibly because gladiators sit at a rather unusual height at the base of the calves, so a knee length skirt exposes an ugly-shaped gap between the top of the gladiators and the bottom of the skirt. This doesn't occur with skirts just below knee length, as the gap is smaller and the line of the calf is continued, instead of curving inwards like it does when it approaches the knee. I also wouldn't recommend full-length skirts with gladiators as they'll hide your beautiful sandals, as will pants/jeans. If you really want to wear a bifurcated garment, go for pants that are loose or fisherman-style and finish above the ankle.
Now that you know of a few different outfits to work them into, where can you get them from?
These Mogil sandals are quite like Ashley's Chanel ones and Kate Moss' ones, and the black shade goes really well with the Roman look. The Alice McCall sandals have a much quirkier colour scheme and are generally more contemporary, so you could probably pair these ones with skinny jeans. Both pairs can be found on ozdesigner.com.
You can also purchase gladiator sandals at Shoobiz (Bonsai in the 'Flat Sandals' category), Witchery, Wittner (Margen, Rina, and Margot), and Zomp. Also check out eBay from time to time, as well as your local op shops.
