Geometry lesson #1-mini dresses!
July 23rd 2007 09:31
The rumour is that it all started with Jean Shrimpton (seen above with Paul Jones from The Manfreds in the day). The bombshell that stunned us all with the mini skirt at the Melbourne Cup, remember her? The one with no hat and gloves? Well she is reportedly the femme that began the Pucci mini dress phenomenon back in the 60's.
The legend has returned. The geometrically printed mini dress. Not for the faint hearted, nor the thick-thighed; this style is purely for the skinny-legged "Shrimpettes" out there. If you can carry it, your choices are endless.
From high-end designer labels to your more affordable productions, you can definitely find yourself a dress to last you through the winter / spring transition. Inspired by Pucci and translated by many, you are sure to be the belle of the ball in any of the styles and patterns available. So grab your compass and become part of the ‘square set’. Yeah sorry, bad geometry joke.
Net-a-porter.com carry not only the traditional and legendary Pucci designs, in their original psychedelic style, but they also have many other labels with geo prints this season, such as Cavalli, LAMB, Zuttion and above, Mint. You can very easily imagine yourself as Twiggy wearing the above at a cocktail event, with some little kitten heels and white hoop earrings. Don’t forget the big eyelashes.
More locally, you can find the colourful Mondrian inspired range of dresses (and other pieces) from Tina Kalivas, and the more futuristic range from Alice McCall, the standout from her recent range being the red and white stripe hooded mini dress, with clover cut-outs on the back panel.
Not immune are our local up-and-comers Shakuhachi, with their take on the mini dress showing a more feminine floaty feel, while maintaining the mathematical formula within their fabric design.
Trawling through the web, you’ll see a similar trend occurring in the States. The hardest part is making your choice. At large department store sites like Asos, Neiman Marcus and Ron Herman, you can find many sweet options, from labels such as Mina and Milly. [Insert usual warning about checking size when buying from the web here].
For those of us on a budget, again locally, you might try stores like Bardot, who have a great "Pucci-esque" print in mauve. To get a taste of designer style on a more modest salary, check the LifeWITHBird range recently released by Sportsgirl. Designed by Bridget McCall (Alice's sister) and Nicholas Van Messner, a dynamic duo bound for a huge career, with a sterling first effort through the Australian chain staple.
While it's chilly wear these with tights and boots. When it gets warmer, grab some cute ballet flats. For the courageous, go for the new footy socks and t-bar heels look. Either way, keep accessories plain and simple in order to let the dress be your statement piece.
Just make sure you take your hat and gloves if you're headed to spring carnival.

Do you think we have yet reached the phase where wearing gloves has become almost as unusual as the lack thereof for Ms Shrimpton?

And you're right - wearing hat and gloves is a special occasion thing - and even then it seems outdated.
But it would be nice....to do it again. I was soooo born in the wrong time!
Thanks for the comment!!!!
