Urban Make Over
Associatedpress.com is reporting that in Amsterdam this week a project has been unveiled that transposed 16 ex-brothels from the world famous “Red Light District” into studios for fashion designers.
Urban makeovers don’t get much more ambitious than Amsterdam’s notoriously seedy den of deceit. Over the years rising crime levels have forced the Cities government to arrive at this creative solution to an age old problem.
Funnily enough there are a few glitches in the “Emperor’s New Clothes”, including the fact that some of the new high class tenants are “very curious whether my clients will come here."
The locals too are unhappy with the clash of purposes complaining their global reputation is being sanitised diminishing tourist dollars and regulars. Part of the attraction of the area after all is the sleaze and distinct atmosphere.
Costing an initial investment of 40 million dollars for the properties and now the residents live “rent free for a year”.
It sounds like an interesting social and cultural experiment. If it works I wonder what other infamous cities could do with a splash of colour and stylish fashion influence?
