Fifties Fair
August 28th 2007 00:36
For those of you who know me or read my posts regularly, you will be well aware that I have a penchant for all things vintage, particularly of the 50's and 60's eras. It will come as no surprise then, that last Sunday, when the Historic Houses Trust opened Rose Seidler house in Wahroonga for their annual Fifties Fair, I made my way over to get a gander.
I wasn't entirely prepared. I had to park about a kilometre away and then walk to the entrance. Once I got to the entrance, there was a queue. Not a little one mind you, I stood in that queue for around 45 minutes just to get in to see what was happening. Once I got through the entrance though, and I could see the vintage garb dotted throughout the native bushland of the property I was like a kid in a candy store.
Beautiful girls in sweet dresses and skirts, some utterly dressed to the nines in their Sunday best with hats and gloves. Plenty of cats-eye sunglasses, demure cardigans and hot-rollered hair. The boys were equally impressive, with greasers and rockabillies with quiffed do’s and Teddy boy shoes.
After wandering through the various stalls selling their vintage clothing, vivid reproductions, selections of Danish bric-a-brac and kitschy kitchenalia, I toured Rose Seidler House. Restored to its original style, this Bauhaus gem transports you back to the time that Harry designed it for his ma.
Not being a huge fan of crowds, (and currently being a little financially challenged) I meandered through the bush to have a quick glance at some stalls, and happened upon the hair styling stall. Two gorgeous ladies were creating traditional 50’s hair styles for men, women and kids alike. Now that I couldn’t resist! I queued, yet again, but it was worth it for the air hostess meets Mrs. Kravitz from Bewitched style French Roll that my bonny Scottish hairdresser gave me.
Inspired by the whole event, this week is a 50’s theme for all of my blog posts. I hope the fans of yesteryear will join me on the journey through time, and my readers will follow me for some fun!
The people at the BBQ I went to afterwards just didn’t seem to understand why I was so dressed up.....especially given that my hair made me taller than most of the men.

The house is amazingly well designed inside. Modernest and minimalist and very functional, way ahead of its time. It's got the original furniture and appliance collection inside which was again, very forward thinking. There's a deck with this wicked Miro meets Mondrian mural on one of the walls. It's really beautiful!

Flashes of memories
oooh what an interesting day! It sounds like it was in such a great setting too. I just love that house too. That first photo is great - how you caught the swirling motion of the dress.

Thanks for stopping in Ash - unfortunately I can't take credit for the first photo, that one is from the HHT web site (as credited). It really was a gorgeous day, the first warm day in a few months, and not a cloud to be seen. Gorgeous bushland and everyone was happy and in a great mood. Not to mention incredibly well dressed! That with the tunes from the main stage which had a series of great bands on....it was marvellous!

This looks like fun.. and the setting?
...sublime...
I love old stuff too and I hope it goes on the road one day, around the country... I love the idea of having to walk a bit to get to it too... that's very fifties *chuckle*
Great day out by the looks of it...

And you're right, love the colourful decorations. It definitely makes the whole athmosphere seem even 'happier'.
Just wondering though, how 'multi-cultural' were the visitors? As I would love to come oneday, maybe.. hehe

Yaviz - you know I don't even think I looked to see how "multi-cultural" the event was because I don't think to notice, but I would really hope that's not an issue? It was an open event, all welcome. Just how it always should be. Please tell me you don't think of that before you go out?!
