Fashion Week Wrap Up
May 8th 2007 05:22
I apologise for being so slack and not posting on the last two days of fashion week, I became overrun with my new job (at Saba, for those playing at home) and Uni work.
So here is my brief summary of Thursday and Friday as well as some general thoughts.
Thursday (Day 4)
It was a toss-up between Alice McCall and Josh Goot, but I gave it to Alice McCall, because she’s one of my favourites.
Nerd-meets-50s house wife-meets-space cadet. That’s the vibe I got from McCall’s Spring/Summer 07 collection.
Rocking Nerd glasses and high waisted jeans were mixed with pretty printed 50s smock tops and dresses in a primary pallet with injections of acid yellows and greens and bright metallics. Amazing attention to detail, including hand crotched applique, quilting and embroidery, remained signatures of McCall’s collection
There were the usually beautiful dresses that were used to seeing from McCall, but with a more modern silhouette.
All in all it was a collection that reaffirmed the direction of the label as well as its place near the very top of the Australian fashion industry.
Friday (Day 5)
Well, there weren’t a huge amount of shows to choose from, so I went with the obvious Marnie Skillings.
Her collection was entitled “The future has a past”, and as Skillings told news.com.au, was an exploration of the meeting point between modernism and nostalgia.
As such, there was a continual contrasting of feminine and neutral colours with heavy chromes, blacks and silvers. A huge range of fabrics from lace and silk to heavy cottons were layered in unusual ways.
There was an emphasis on separates, with very few dresses. Skillings said that pieces were conceived to be able to worn with each other in order to create an overall look, and this thought was very clearly articulated throughout.
To be honest, it was a bit all over the place for my liking, and seemed to lack a strong focus. However there were some interesting, noteworthy pieces whichI have featured below. (All photographs courtesy of www.gettyimages.com)
So all in all a very interesting week of fashion-related fun in Sydney. Lots of controversy, from the no-show by many Australian big name designers, to the constant model-weight debate (Wayne Cooper went and put his foot in it on the weekend, see www.news.com.au for details). My favourite show for the week was camilla & marc, can’t wait until it hits the shops.
Btw, bit of a correction, the Zimmerman show was actually on day 2, not day 3, so sorry about any confusion. I had had very little sleep when I wrote that!
