Top 5 Sins Against Fashion

March 13th 2008 00:04
What Fashion mistakes stand out for you?

A classic example

Over on the LA Times Blog there is a really amusing piece on fashion Faux pas titled “The Vaticans Five Fashion sins”

According to latimes.com the top 5 travesties of style are:

1. Thou shalt not wear gold lame short-shorts--a.k.a Satan panties--from American Apparel unless thou art a tart.

2. Thou shalt not fight over the straightening iron. In fact, thou shalt confer over which thou will be going out with flat hair, which, incidentally, looks extremely fussy and fey on a dude.

3. Thou shalt not wear brown lip liner with no lipstick. Evil. Makes the devil dance a jig and cause droughts.

4. Thou shalt never ever, ever wear a boa. Ever.

5. Thou shalt not dress like a naughty Catholic school girl gone teen runaway meets a Vegas stripper when thou art, like, 30-plus. The Pope really hates that look.

Too see the images that illustrate these Haute Couture Commandments visit latimes.com

Naturally the whole purpose of pilfering this post was so that I could add a few of my own abominations and ask you, what are your top 5 fashion faux pas?

1. Thou shalt not have an artificially enhanced breast size that frightens little children and causes bodily harm to those who have them.

fake breasts
Duck or I'll shoot

2. Though shalt not wear fluorescent colours outside the house.

3. Thou shalt realise there is such a thing as too much cosmetic surgery

The obvious choice?

4. Thou shalt not forget that guys should always wear a belt with dress pants if your shirt is tucked in.

no belt pants
No, no, you justhave to say no!

5. The style lords decrees ugly Ug boots are never cool, but make good slippers.

So what are your fashions sins that the Vatican should decree hell worthy offences?

Its the holy grail for every high street fashion chain boss - take the cream of the best catwalk designs from London, Paris, Milan and New York and turn them into speed chic, affordable fashion that flies off the shelves.

In the golden years of Haute Couture (1947-1957) Dior, Fath and Balenciaga had a one month publication ban on all images of their runway, as the exclusive sale of one calico toille to a Ready to Wear house was often enough to fund the beginnings of their next collection; Those caught sketching in public faced public prosecution. Today copying is rife, and it seems that not an Australian Fashion Week goes by without another young designer being accused by the media of copying

Ultra thin is not 'in' (LINK)

September 15th 2007 15:16
There was a time when a woman's wealth was recognized by her rubenesque figure. Today Paris Hilton lookalikes are revered and every womens magazine don't print without them. Governments around the world are now taking action to address the unrealistic body image expectations placed upon the worlds modelling industry. The Australian Fashion Council hosted a forum in March to discuss and debate whether or not industry guidelines are necessary to discourage the use of extraordinarily thin models on Australian runways and to ensure the health and wellbeing of Young Australians working as fashion models.

More importantly it raises the discussion that Designers and media have an ethical obligation to set the right role models for the youth of today

Tristan Blair - What Else! (LINK)

It's fair to say after trawling boutique after fabulous boutique in this beautiful city, there is noone aside from Massarro of course, who quite puts the same shine on a pair of shoes than Australian Designer Tristan Blair.

He is elusive, demure and completely humble about his creativity. I once attempted to help him source a shoe manufacturer in Brazil. He had become great friends with a man and his chicken in Bali and was loathe to change. Given my experiences in working with Brazilian timeframes I can understand why. Nothing quite happens fast enough in that country. Needless to say in a Summer that sports cotton candy and casual style you cant go past his new collection "Wonderful Armour
