Website name: www.allynscura.com
Location: California, USA
Category: Eyewear
Rating: 4 out of 5 (The range and styles available are immense, but lack of quality photos let these guys down a little)
As a tween (which we didn’t even have then) the choices available to me for eyewear left a lot to be desired. OK, it was the 80’s, yes. Glasses were big, and mostly unflattering to my face shape, or any face shape really (think Simon and Vicki from A Country Practice ....*shudder*).
I pined for something quirky and fun, even a little nerdy, something rockabilly or mod, maybe a bit Audrey or Grace to go with my bob and winkle-pickers . Back then, I had no chance. Nowadays, thanks to the modern invention of the interweb, we have Allyn Scura. Sexy secretary look, here I come!
Supplying the celebrities and studios of Hollywood for many years, Allyn Scura have a massive range of “new-old-stock”, that is, antique and vintage glasses that have hardly or never been worn. This includes frames for prescription eyewear for women, men and children from times past.
Allyn Scura also have a range of highly covetable vintage sunglasses including designs by Dior, Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin and Pucci and have created their own designs in prescription frames which have a unique modern style with retro inspiration.
Operating the site is based on a widget in the top left of the window, which helpfully even includes back and forward arrows. Once you head to the “vintage frames” category, you uncover the many styles available from antiques to recent vintage. You can find yourself a pair of 18th Century Chinese frames right through to a Marilyn Monroe “Millionaire” style. Measurements are provided, and within the FAQ section you can find out how to measure yourself for the appropriate size of glasses.
Glasses are sourced from throughout the world and currently in stock are around 50,000 frames which in most cases are reasonably priced. Allyn Scura do not have a storefront however, and not all frames are shown for purchase online. Instead, these guys tour the antique and retro show and exhibitions throughout the US, where the more rare and specialised glasses are available to citizens of the US of A.
They do however post internationally, and have a return policy should your measurements be not quite right or the frames not be what you’re after (lab work for script glasses notwithstanding). Shipping costs are reasonable and you can pay using all major credit cards. Having an environmental policy, you will not receive any invoice in the mail with your goods, but rather by email to prevent unwanted printing. Nice and green!
The adage goes that “boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses”. Having been a spectacled person for most of my life, I can honestly say that men do treat you differently when you’re wearing glasses...but they ain’t afraid of making no pass.
