Fashion in Film: The Lost Boys
August 15th 2007 23:42
With all the recent hype about the production of the sequel, "The Lost Boys 2", I was sent back to 1987, when the original film hit cinemas. The Joel Schumacher directed teen-horror flick includes a stellar ensemble cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Dianne Wiest, “The Coreys” (Haim and Feldman), and Jami Gertz. The movie was named after the gang of eternal youngsters that follow Peter Pan through Neverland, echoing the immortality of the vampires. Check this clip for a cool montage of the film and its dark and sexy ambience.
Jami Gertz, who had a small role in 16 Candles three years prior, was mysterious, nubile and magnetic as Star, a half-vampire who brought male audiences to their knees. Her ethnic hippie style combined with classic military edges echoed 70's bohemian with late 80's appeal to create sultry vampness.
In contrast to Corey Haim's Miami inspired gear and preppy blonde streaks, throughout the entirety of the film we see Star in hippie skirts, with ethnic touches to her outfit. With loose curly hair, she kicked off a thousand big fringes. Jami's however was natural and her imitators worldwide went hairspray crazy, and created a local phenomenon some called the "horrid forehead".
Before Sienna cried "boho", Jami showed us how feminine grunge could be truly bewitching, and of course outfits like this can still be seen around today. In order to emulate the look of Star from the film, there are a few simple rules to follow.
Firstly, the broderie anglaise buttoned camisole. I found a similar top on sale in the UK, very pretty and a good basis for your outfit. Just be careful of blood stains. And maybe you should wash yours from time to time as Star’s stays on throughout the whole film. Maybe half-vampires don’t sweat?
A tiered skirt, embroidered, or with mirrors with a Moroccan feel needs to be worn on the bottom half. It should be mid-calf to ankle length, and can be layered to give volume. This adds drama to the outfit, and continues with the floaty feel of light fabric.
To accessorise, you'll require a belt, preferably with a middle-eastern belly dancing feel, like the one below. This will however allow your victims to hear you coming.
Covering your eyes from the harsh sunlight requires a scarf which doubles as a little blankie for naps. Star always had an antique floral fringed version that she carried around with her, as well as a rainbow style that she would tuck under her camisole strap. This flamenco inspired silk scarf is ideal. Not to mention beee-auuuuutifuuuul.
Jewellery must be mostly chains, in pale gold or silver, with some beading. Always crucifix-free, Indian inspired leaf emblems and shoulder dusters worn on one ear are perfect. This was the era that began non-matching earrings, so go for it.
To keep your cold-blooded body warmer during your nights out hunting or playing motorcycle chicken, an oversized military-inspired jacket is essential. This gives an edge to the outfit, and your hapless victims will know you mean business.
While you are out wearing your cursed couture, look out for the yummy Michael (Jason Patric) at the Santa Carla carnival wanting to get his ear pierced.
Remember........."You'll never get old, and you'll never die.
But you must feed....."

Thanks katyzzz - I know Kiefer with those eyes is pretty scary.....
Most boys I know fell in love with her in this movie JD and he was cool and so menacing in this film.
Sorry if I trod on your toes Bryn, I didn't know you'd done a post on it at all, let alone that recently! It's a very cool one though, and I agree with a lot of the things you've said! Thanks for leaving a link.
