Fashion in Film: Annie Hall

Art reflected life in 1977’s Annie Hall. Woody Allen and Diane Keaton were in fact dating, Woody had previously had a career in comedy like his character, Alvy, and Diane’s real surname was Hall. Her nickname? Annie.

Costume designer Ruth Morley styled our stars in this acclaimed “nervous romance”, working in conjunction with Ralph Lauren to achieve the preppy masculine look Ms. Keaton made famous in this film. It is rumoured that these were in fact Diane's own clothes. Original to its time, Annie spawned a thousand tie purchases for women, and became one of the key looks of the late 70’s for the counter-culture.

This look translates through to today. Kate Moss and Sienna Miller revived the waistcoat a few years back, slowly but surely we’ve seen ties re-enter the female wardrobe, coupled with man shirts and baggy pants. Brogue boots are making a comeback. Man style dressing is definitely "in".

These Marc by Marc Jacobs pants are the classic masculine cut with a slightly higher waist, perfect for the Annie archetypes. You’ll find a lot of designers will have their version of a man style pant in the coming seasons.

For a matching shirt, you can’t go past Mr. Rose. Ensuring a quality garment with the right fit for your bust size, their “Man-Oh-Man” style is perfect for this look, and has a sweetly sculptured cuff.

Waistcoats are more freely available since their recent celebrity popularity (see aforementioned Sienna). Hunt around your local op-shops for a classic baggier style, or if money is no issue, you could go for this structured Alexander McQueen version, found at Net-a-Porter.

Ties for women are harder to come by these days. Some chain stores such as Portmans and Sportsgirl have stocked them in recent years. To find something truly original, head to a quality vintage store, try eBay or hunt around for one at an on-line locale.

To complete the quirky and offbeat feel to this outfit, you’ll need a hat. You could go for the boho floppy style, but if you’re true to Annie the brim will be of medium length, and sat low, toward the back of your head. The closest style I found was below from Hats in the Belfry.

You’ll need a big enormous oversized massive straw tote bag. Annie carried everything in hers including her tennis racquet, that’s how big. These are tricky to find....so here’s one that was pretty too. I should mention, though, to make sure it's large.

If you haven’t seen the film, I found a great clip here that shows some of the best scenes from the film, and conveys the general feel of the movie, with its comedy and charm.

Annie Hall's was a classic style that seems to resurface every decade since, you’ll feel very New-York-neuroses meets seedy cabaret in this ensemble.

I quite like the Marc Jacobs pants (although I doubt they would flatter my physique).

Surprisingly baggy man style pants suit most women....just depends on how you wear them I guess. I'm sure you'd look lovely Nina! Thanks for popping in!

Would you believe I have never seen this film???

I know. It's bad.
I will...one day...as genius as Allen is...as witty and grumpily lovable as he is...his neuroses drive me nuts!

I do like Diane Keaton...and I love love love man style pants!
I love the cut of them. Surprisingly good on women who do have as nature intended it hips.
...but I do also like how it looks on tall lean women...so Vogue circa ?? (help me out CC).

I too love the Marc Jacobs pants.

...and I LOVE your Fashion In Film series of posts Chic.

hugs hon...

DUSKY! !! ! !!!

A lot of people feel that way about Woody. It's understandable. He is a mess.

The look you're talking about is I think the Katherine Hepburn style from the 1940's...peeerrrhaps?

Thanks for all of your support - I love writing the Fashion in Film series too....!

CC,

I liked the gear and bag in the first picture of Annie with the sleaze.

Fashion knows no boundaries.

I love Annie Hall, the film... it's a powerfully personal work by Allen. Despite his irritating character, Dusk, there's a lot of great social commentary in the film, it's beautifully made and Diane Keaton -well! What a role!

'What can I say? La-di-da. (sigh) La di da.'

My review of Annie Hall

katyzzz - yes, that is her typical outfit and the one she's best known for in the film and history really.

Cib - thanks for the link - you're right - it's a cool movie indeed.

Thanks for hanging out with me guys!

I think brogues were the best thing to come out of this film...they look so good on men and women alike
