Fashion in Film: Amélie
August 2nd 2007 03:32
The doe-eyed innocence of Audrey Tautou captured our hearts in 2001 with the Jean-Pierre Jeunet film "Amélie" (aka Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amélie Poulain). With her child like ways and admirable intent on improving the world around her, we were drawn in to her secret world of magic and mystery.
Inspiring thousands of haircuts worldwide in the quirky but gorgeous early 20th century style bob, her style in the film was a mix of post-WWII thrift with Parisian street urchin. The film's unique sense of timelessness is in part owed to the costuming of Audrey and her co-stars, and the stylised filtered cinematography. The hair style was carefully chosen from many, as seen on the DVD extras, in order to compliment Audrey's features.
For a girl to dress like Amélie, a unique retro inspired feel is required, old-fashioned camisoles, mandarin collars, A-line skirts, feminine cardis, lots of red and green, mixed with a French sense of style. For those yet to see the film, this bloopers outtake gives an insight into the charming world of Amélie. Really Long Link
I've had a hunt for some Amélie inspired gear so that those inclined can be an Audrey look alike. Start with feminine underclothes. Delicate cami's and sweet knickers, such as this Rufflecake design found at Papinelle.
To achieve a 40's inspired look, I've chosen a dress from Newtown store Retro Spec'd Clothing. You can purchase some cool reproductions of 40's and 50's gear for men and women, both in store (from South King Street) or online at retrospecd.com. This cute swing dress will do the trick nicely.
To interfere in people's lives inconspicuously, you'll need to wear a cardigan or heavy overcoat. To go with the dress, I found this gorgeous Paul and Joe number on Net-A-Porter.
Amélie always wore heavy shoes and black socks. The best option is to go for a classic school shoe or better still the original and best, a pair of Doctor Martins.
To accessorise you'll need to find yourself a sweet little notebook, to keep track of the entire goings on. Kikki K has an amazing collection of boutique diaries and journals. I've chosen a Red Cloth option to go with the outfit.
In the case of showers while mooching around town, you'll need a quaint and pretty brolly. This one from UK based Brollies Galore is red and perfectly dainty.
Grab your smooth rocks for skimming, prop up your telescope to start prying, put on your best Parisian pout and head out to be the most adorable Amélie you can.
Maybe your destiny will be fabulous too.

I actually remember seeing this movie. A friend took me who had acquired free tickets so that was rather cool.
Retro and old fashioned, well, I'm in with a chance there.
I just loved the brolly and the book, one would need to play a role to carry it. I'll think about that, I may well find myself as an underpaid extra.
She is cute and the post is beaut...excuse the rhyme.

It's fascinating how you combine fashion with other subjects, it's brilliant.
