Barbarella flaunts it
Fashionrat.com writer Chic Critique used to do a fantastic series of posts (usually on a Friday) that were under the banner Fashion in Film. Amongst her fabulous selections were Annie Hall, Amelie, Fame, Star from The Lost Boys, Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction and Molly Ringwald in 16 Candles. All classics that have become the essence of their time, inspired countless designers and were imitated in the real world.
Taking it upon myself to continue the vibrant ideals that Chic Critique so perfectly captured I thought it appropriate to begin with one of the most influential icons in cinema history.
In the 1960’s a futuristic cult classic was born. Starring the sexually liberated Jane Fonda in the title role of space goddess Barbarella, she is an erotic fantasy that has sustained into the new millennium. Inspiring a brand new remake to be Directed by Robert Rodriguez of Sin City fame and star Rose McGowan the uni-legged stripper from Planet Terror in the lead, the time is ripe for the trends of old to become new again.
The Barbarella look is bottled sex appeal, the knee high boots and high cut leather mini skirt is unforgettable but demands certain physical dimensions to fill out. (Cross Bow is an optional accessory) Everything in old barbs wardrobe should only be worn by the fittest of specimens.
The figure hugging white spandex body suit complete with speed lines accentuates the femme curves, the black version also rises to a sleeveless cleavage enhancer.
Thinking about it now the only time these testosterone magnets could be worn in public without causing a riot is in the context of fancy dress, but I still would love to have my heart stopped by seeing the style replace the white trash flesh exposing trends of lesser street walking wannabe vixens.
