Easy Ways to Update your Winter Wardrobe – the cheapskate’s guide to being fashionable
April 9th 2007 09:06
Today, while attempting to slowly digest the mountains of chocolate that I have consumed in the last few days, I was planning and reorganising my winter wardrobe. As you may have noticed by now, I’m a poor Uni student and can’t afford to buy an entire new wardrobe at the change of every season. Instead, I try and think of ways to make items last as long as possible, and ways of updating last season’s pieces to fit with new season’s trends. And being the generous person I am, I thought I’d share a few of my ideas with you.
Last Year’s trends to KEEP
Skinny leg anything – still the pant and jean of choice for designers and celebs. If you just can’t handle another pair of stovepipes, then go to the other extreme: wide leg pants are so hot right now, particularly with a high waist and a flattering tie. Make sure you get them in a quality fabric and I guarantee you will look ridiculously fashionable.
Oversize Grey Knits – Actually anything grey can be kept, it’s your base colour for the season. Also, comfy cardigans, long wraps and warm Grandpa jumpers are still hot this season, particularly worn over tights and ankle boots.
Boots, Boots, Boots – Flat boots, black boots, tan boots, felt boots, FMBs, they’re a winter staple. Just put away last winter’s wedge heel boot (yech) and the cowboy boots from like 3 years ago, seriously it’s time to move on. I’m not even going to mention ug boots (*shudder*). Ankle boots are the hottest ticket at the mo, but you can get away with tucking last seasons flat ruched boots into skinny pants/jeans.
Waists – We’ve only seen the start of high-waists in everyday fashion and the few offerings we had last season (mainly pencil skirts and belted dresses) still have their place in this season’s fashion. However, those belts that are one piece of “leather” and tie up around your waist (as seen most commonly in Supre) are totally out. It’s all about chunky belts with details, or several super thin belts.
Ballet Shoes – They never really go out, and this season they’re bigger than ever. Printed, leather, black, tan and worryingly enough, leopard print, are all big this season, particularly worn with tights. Speaking of which…
Tights – They’re a bit longer this season, tending to finish just above the ankle rather than mid-calf, but really, it doesn’t matter. Team with flats, heels or ankle boots, as a great cover up for this season’s rising hemlines. Black is the most popular and versatile, but try some of the great winter hues (forest greens, deep purples, mustard yellows) for a different spin on this classic look.
Stay tuned for Part 2 - Last Year’s trends to DITCH.
