Balenciaga, Vernacular Fashion

Gemma Ward Balenciaga

After using Balenciaga as an example in my white shirt post I remembered what a stand-out collection Nicolas Ghesquière produced for Fall 2007 collection and I was reminded by our very own (why are we so patriotic when it comes to beautiful people) Gemma Ward wearing Balenciaga at Cannes.

By assembling some culturally fraught imagery, the quasi-Middle Eastern scarf with the American collegiate blazer, Ghesquière speaks an aesthetic language worthy of in-depth analysis. This juxtaposition, when coupled with the somewhat ethereal makeup and undone hair creates a borderline anti-fashion collection. The clothes speak of a global community, a postmodern pastiche of influences and ideology. Each embodies the more stimulating side of fashion as a vernacular polemic for the contemporary citizen of the world.

To step back from theory for a moment, in part, what is so fascinating about this collection is the quality and attention to detail. From these shoes which seem ready for an adventure playground, who knew that grey stockings open shoes could not only be stylish but sexy? A feat in itself.

to the explicit attention in this button, cut, zipper and colour of this jacket.

With sporty jodhpurs ready for city trots, serious shoes and scarves combining the style of multiple cultures, this look is not only fresh and innovative but street-ready.

Sure there are some items in the collection which are a little much for me like the Gucci knock-off belt and this 80s flashback jacket but even in this case the detail and care taken goes some way (but not all) to redeem what is really quite ugly.

As a trend setter rather than follower, Ghesquière is an inspiration for designers and fashionistas alike, speaking seriously and sardonically about the world and style.
