It's all in the gams: Jessica Stam
June 7th 2007 00:42
One of the most striking models of the contemporary brat pack is Jessica Stam, a statuesque Canadian who has the kind of natural physique required for catwalk shows. She is indeed long and slender but there is nothing painful about the proportions of her legs or the position of her clavicle. My general rule is that if the knee is wider than the thigh there’s a problem but Stam is in proportion as you can see from the Stella McCartney show.
Apparently raised on a farm, Stam has that sort of wholesome beauty only North-American women can evoke. Even the most naively innocent looking Eastern Europeans have an element of mystery, of hardship and a place in cultural history. Or am I being too mean?
To reinforce my suggestion of superficiality, here’s Stam in a Victoria’s Secret parade. I’m not convinced that silver lingerie is sexy but certainly Ms Stam looks stunning.
To contrast, and reveal the extent to which models must be chameleons, here’s Stam in the recent Galliano parade, almost unrecognisable under the artifice, the cupid’s bow lips and layers of contrasting fabrics.
Stam wore Galliano, only in the form of Dior Couture this time, to the Costume Institute Gala and although most of her body was veiled by intricately patterned fabric, she still looked sensuous and just a little more continental artiste than Canadian farm-girl.
And of course, the dream of every young model is to be on the cover of Vogue, in particular if it involves this sort of close up ensuring the focus is more on the face than the clothes. Stam is only 21 so I imagine we’ll be seeing plenty more of her on the catwalks to come. Who knows, maybe another inimitable fashion item will borrow her name in the future.
