Yeah They Were All Yellow

For Australian residents, you’re probably hiding under a rock if you didn’t see any coverage over the last few weeks of the David Jones and Myer Spring/Summer launch shows. Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins were parading their respective stores’ wares and championing this season’s trends, sycophantically surrounded by media, buyers and designers alike.

Perhaps because it’s so striking, one of the stand outs of these parades was the yellow dress. Seen in a series of collections in casual to formal wear, you are guaranteed to see young fashionistas sporting a golden tan and a yellow mini in the summer streets.

I was reluctant to cover the scourge of yellow that has plagued the media over the last month or so. However I feel I owe it to the loyal few who read my posts, to help them find a suitable option should they have the skin for it and wish to indulge in a summer splash of sunflower style.

My fave for designer wear, Net-A-Porter have a sunny Nina Ricci cocktail dress, a quirky Chloe mini dungaree dress, or this lovely shift below. (Cash up before you click).

For a more budget conscious option, Revolve Clothing has a cute version available to buy online by Karta, with some embroidered embellishments.

Australian designers take up the helm admirably. Josh Goot has given us a sporty luxe style mini dress in his latest collection shown above. For a more feminine touch to the trend, try Fleur Wood who always injects romance into the mix.

Nicola Finetti puts a bit of cha-cha fun into it with ruffles, while Kirrily Johnston make it long, floaty and futuristic.

Check chain stores for their take, you’re likely to see something similar at Sportsgirl, Portmans and no doubt labels like Cooper St. and One Teaspoon will have a casual beachy version to pop on over your togs.

I apologise if this post comes with a hint of jaded annoyance. I simply can’t wear yellow, it makes me look ridiculously gaunt in the face and does nothing for me whatsoever. This is one of those trends for beautiful, tanned, tall, elegant types, like Eva Mendes. Be warned.

No wonder Megan and Jennifer carry it off.

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the things that you do.

In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.
