Clutch-ing at Straws – where do I get a day clutch?

Blame Carrie Bradshaw and her Patricia Field Sex and the City ways, but it seems that the spring trend from the Northern Hemisphere is set to make its way down under. A more streamline and elegant alternative to the hobo and the tote bags we’ve seen lately, introducing the new day clutch.

While it will take some getting used to for us hoarders and “in case of emergency” handbag types, it does add an element of polish to a daytime ensemble. A perfect match to the neon brights, geo print mini dresses and flowing maxi dresses, you’re sure to find something to suit from the copious current choices.

Appearing everywhere right now from editorial spreads in the latest mags to newspapers to blogs (ha!) is the Fendi multi-coloured clutch shown below. First appearing on the Milan catwalks for the 2007 fall show, it will add impact and a smidgeon of dash.

If you want designer style but can’t afford the full investment, Love Me and Leave Me have a huge library of handbags and accessories which you can hire for a week or a month at a time. The more desirable bags (such as the Dior saddle) have a wait list, but generally the local designs are available for a special occasion or to add daring to your day-to-day.

Other locals like Bird Motel with their beach street style have options like the Silver clutch from One Teaspoon, and Urban Originals have a very sweet Red Leather Bow version. Spencer and Rutherford maintain their unique girlish piquant while offering an earthy neutral tone in this release shown below.

Web sites in the states are still keeping this new spring staple in stock. Revolve Clothing has a cute banana coloured clutch by Goldenbleu, as well as the stylish “Audrey” by Kooba shown below. Asos stock the very cute Loop clutch and as always, the price is reasonable.

You’ll have to keep only the essentials in these little numbers. Purse, phone, keys....maybe a compact and some lippie. No packets of tissues, bags of trail mix, diaries or paracetamol. Maybe it’s time to embrace your inner-minimalist and strut out the door holding a stylish clutch and heading for coffee with girlfriends.

Just don’t try and hold your take away cup in the same hand....remember, no handles here!

Sorry, CC, I don't like any of those, although I think it's a good shot of SJP, ugly girl who does a lot with herself.

Hi CC

I'm addicted to Carrie and the gang and watch them when I have lunch (I work from home and have Foxtel, what a life, huh?!).

I'd be no good with a clutch bag as I carry so much...and it wouldn't force me to carry less (I've tried that and have killed many bags in my time), I'd just moan more 'cos I'd be scrambling in and out of it all the time. I'm a girl that needs a decent-sized bag....

I've always associated clutch bags with formal evening wear but that Fendi clutch sure looks trendy and suitable for day use.

I bet it costs a mint too!

Yes, I realised that after I write my blurb that they are for evenings....so surely I would be carrying less....well, that's the theory, I still think I carry too much!!

Thanks all for stopping by and adding your 2 cents!

katyzzz - you don't have to be sorry - fashion is individual and you like what you like! My hubby thinks SJP has a horse face too, but I like her!

Tracy - I watch the SATC re-runs on Foxtel too.....I can't help myself! And they are newly intended for day use, you were right. It would be an adjustment for me too....my bag is bursting at the seams. Literally.

Charles - what size handbag do you normally use for day?

Cheers all!!!

Size does not matter, right?

Charles, wrong, but then again you do carry a handbag, so maybe it doesn't matter.

Not gonna catch on with me. Im a backpack girl. I have a purse to go with 'The Suit' which I bought to compete in horse shows(believe it or not!) including very silly ladies hat with feather arrangement the horse is hell bent on eating. My usual bag is a small black backpack with this gorgeous cat and the logo - 'Bad Kitty'

Luvin' all the bagz! They all seem very cute and unique!! The ones with the bow and especially the white one with the zipper I'm sure any girl would look stylish & adorable carrying them!

Oh, so size does matter!

And no, I don't carry a handbag - never said I did

Kleo you sound like a practical miss.....these would not rock your boat understandably. Maybe the hungry horse would like them though?

Yaviz - thanks for popping in - long time no *see*! So glad to hear you like them and I agree with your choices!

It's OK Charles - we were all poking fun, size only matters for handbags.... mostly

Cheers all and thanks for the comments!

....clutches are great!

In cars.

...hee hee..

So not a practical item..but very glam. It's a 'look'....to go with the large sunnies...!

I was watching 'The Spy Who Loved Me' the other day and I love how Barbara Bach (Agent XXX) just uses her elegant clutch to carry her gun...and then she just throws it away!

It's not the minimalism that deters me...the bags I wear are handsfree and carry the essentials... I couldn't handle not having handles! Having to hold it constantly or having it tucked under your arm...it's just irritating.

Having said that I did ooh and ahh over the banana one and the Fendi one.

Big mwah Chic-ita...

Dusk

ps. SATC reruns...cannot get enough...

Hello sweet Dusky girl!!

I agree - they are not entirely practical and it is a hass knowing where to put them.....but they are terribly pretty. I have a few vintage clutches that I use but only when I know I'm not going to need to hang on to it.

Thanks for stopping by honey pie!

Hello Dusk and CC and everyone

It's good to see I have company with my Sex and the City addiction.

I'm with you, Dusk, I just couldn't commit to a bag that needs special care, I'm sure I would just put it down somewhere and toddle off....I have enough problems remembering a brolly when I carry one,

Yay, I have a day clutch bag. Does that mean I'm fashionable? I LOVE the Fendi - with all the different colours, that can easily go with any coloured spring/summer dress. How much is that for? No, wait, don't tell me...I don't want to get depressed.

Thanks Tracy!

Yes Aimzster, of COURSE you're fashionable. I could not find a price on the Fendi - I assume it's a "POA" - which means don't think about it unless you're loaded. Thanks for your visit!

Cheers all!!

Magnus is the poofiest horse Ive ever met - He would adore a sequined clutch to carry his makeup rags, hair comb and coat shining brush.
At the last show a mate said to my mum - "Why do you have 3 handbags?" "Well, ones mine, ones K's, and the other one is Magnus' handbag"

Howdy Kleo - Magnus sounds like a right larf - a poofy horse - too funny!

Kylie - my husband is forever saying another pair of shoes? Another handbag? Surely you don't need another one? So I know how you feel. Thanks for popping in!

Someone needs to read today's blog for me!

I thought of you tonight, CC as I had dinner with a friend that had a gold clutch bag. It was lovely but I still can't see myself with anything like that, I'm so forgetful I would just leave it anywhere....

Finally have developed a vague sense of what I'm supposed to be doing on my website, and therefore decided to have a leisurely look around Orble. As you were the very first person to leave a comment on my very first post, yours was the very first site I went to.

And I very promptly realised I was out of my depth! You sure have this blogging lark down. Loved this post, was drawn to it with all immediacy of course, becuase it featured a scene from SATC.

Now, must go and work out how to get my earnings above one US cent. Pray for me!
