Company Start Up in Paris (LINK)
October 16th 2007 18:08
You run a fashion company in your home country, you meet a wonderful Parisian in your travels, fall in love with the man/woman of your dreams and all of a sudden expanding your operations and setting up your company in the fashion capital of the world (aka - one of the most expensive cities in the world), doesn't appear such a rediculous concept after all.
Or perhaps like many of the thousands of foreign students studying here each year, you too decided that Paris now feels more like home than your mother country and you would like to complement your studies with some work experience or - dare I say it - become a local.
For those of you who have any writing, education, marketing or public relations skills, you do have the opportunity to capitalise on your unique circumstance of living and studying in the worlds fashion capital - and speaking English - and you can sell these services as a willing freelancer!
When I arrived in Paris, my skills and experience as a Journalist and Fashion Editor helped me quickly to meet the who's who of the fashion industry here in Paris, and make a small income selling my fashion knowledge back to magazines in my home country of Australia. My knowledge as a Public Relations executive assisted me to work with my local consulate helping Australian Designers and Beauty products to enter the french market. My thirst to continue teaching and to spend some of my day speaking my native tongue and share my intrinsic knowledge of the South American, European and Asia Pacific markets
with other designers - assisted me to gain a Guest Lecturer position at one of the top fashion schools in Europe.
All of a sudden, I am not so homesick, I find myself learning french quicker and dare I say it - I am now in the throes of everyday Paris life.
So, now I hear you ask - how?
This was a seminar presented by Samina Arnoult, a Financial Consultant who recently delivered at the recent Expatica "I am not a tourist" tradefair on how to set up your own business in France. I am confident you will find the information most useful and of great advantage for those seeking to build one's own fashion entity here in Paris. However, I make no claim on the validity of the content. I recommend that you save your questions for the expert!
Introduction
What does it mean to be a Freelancer in Paris?
In France the term "Freelancer" basically refers to an individual who is responsible for his/her own income, and for generating his/her own clients. A freelancer operates under the legal working status known as "travailleur independant".
Before you make a decision about your work formation, think carefully about your goals and reasons for becoming a freelancer in France. Whatever your ultimate course of action, you will need to do some preliminerary planning and ask yourself some key questions,
particularly if you are changing from a salaried employee to a freelancer.
Working and Legal Status
In considering the options available to you, inform yourself as fully
as possible with regard to administrative processes and obtaining the
documentation required by the French authorities.
Planning Ahead - Social Charges as a "travailleur independant" and taxes
If you are considering becoming a travailleur independant' in france,
be prepared to do some very careful financial preparation as it will
ultimately be the key to your success.
What are my options?
Option 1 - Societe de Portage Salarial
A "societe de portage" is a billing company that acts as an administration liaison between you and you client. Your working status with a "societe de portage" is that of employee (salarie), but you continue to run your business, locate your own clients and function as
an independent entity.
Option 2 - Travailleur Independant
The travailleur independant is the most common status that freelancers use in France and is the simplest way to run your own business.
Option 3 - EURL/SARL
A EURL or SARL is the equivalent of an incorporated company in the US or a limited company in the UK, Pty Ltd in Australia, Liability is limited to the capital requird for start up.
Legally you may be able to set up a EURL or SARL for €1, but in practice, a €7,500 minimum prevails for credibility, banking and suppliers. This is because no credit reporting bureau exists in France. Banks will not open an account if your capital is below that.
You can get a bank appointe by the Banque de France but it will not deliver a checkbook or a credit card or offer loans.
EURL or enterprise unipersonnelle a responsibilite limitee is sole ownership. You are the "gerant" or manager. SARL, or societe a responsabilite limite, requires two partners.
Starting a new life in a country where the locals don't often speak english can be a little overwhelming at times, but there is nothing like sinking your fashion teeth into an incredible luxury market to make life that little more exciting!
