Saturday Powerhouse (Part 1)
August 20th 2007 01:45
Fresh from an early morning breakfast, the family and I headed to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on Saturday morning last. As well as having a Special FX exhibit to keep the rest of them occupied, the Young Blood Designers Market was on and the Fashion from Fleece exhibit featured as part of Sydney Design 07.
The Young Blood Designers Market showcases around 50 up and coming local designers in anything from home wares and jewellery to fashion and art. It is a great location to grab a unique gift or personal bargain from an as yet undiscovered talent, and ‘starving students’.
There is a lot of creativity and colour in the room, with many of the shy youngsters yet to hone their sales technique. That’s what these events are for though, to expose the talent to the world, and allow the public to enjoy the embryonic stages of design careers. With a friendly and casual vibe, wandering through the minimalist and artistic displays was like uncovering a treasure trove, I felt like I was peeking into the not-too-distant future.
Highlights included the one of a kind pinafore style dresses from Corr Blimey which combine well made couture with comfort and individual practicality. Melbourne based Rebound Books take second hand hard back covers from novels and the like, to create quirky notebooks using 100% recycled tree-free denim paper, a great way to prevent landfill and wood chipping, and a very cute pressie. Smug Designs specialise in jewellery made from silver and titanium. Made to order, they offer a collection where the orient meets the future.
Probably my favourite on the day however was finding the work of Donna Sgro. An award winning UTS graduate, Donna showed her current jewellery designs, created from perspex and aluminium, and also introduced her latest clothing range, all inspired by the archetypal pop culture robot. It wasn’t hard to see why Ms. Sgro has impressed her peers and critics alike, there was a great deal of talent in the fashion design, and the attention to detail and hard work were evident.
