Fun with Fashion Solitaire

Fashion Solitaire

Looking for a fun distraction that feeds the fashion desires in us all? Well the website mylifetime.com just may have the haute couture answer in the form of “Fashion Solitaire”.

A variation on the traditional card game Solitaire or Patience the idea is to put together a wardrobe to die for by corresponding clothing items instead of alternating chronological suits.

From Mylifetime.com
“Match cards and create fabulous fashions in this unique blend of solitaire and mix-and-match fun! Use your style and taste to match garments with models, put together trendy outfits, and create signature collections! Create your very own looks in the Design Workshop and add them to unique outfits for bonus cash. Add to your collection by shopping from a catalog of hundreds of designer items. Featuring more than 45 levels of solitaire-style gameplay, eight styles to develop, and hours of original fun, Fashion Solitaire is the hottest game of the season!”

Sadly I haven’t played yet so I can’t offer an objective review, but blogcritics.org had this to say about the game:
”Although overall Fashion Solitaire is a fun game, it has some nagging issues. For a game based on the premise of beauty, graphics is a beast. The images look simplistic and 16-bit. Characters are pixelated and movement is jerky, and these flaws are magnified when in full screen mode. The game's low price of $19.99 is no excuse for shoddy graphics, for I've played countless free games that look superior to this. Considering that it's backed by a major company (Lifetime Networks), one would expect a game of higher quality.”

Sounds like it may be worth a try to me, but then I am a self confessed card game addict who has willingly lost hours of my life to the whims of lady luck. Wether it actually gives us any real life wardrobe ideas remains to be seen, but the concept shows promise.

Here is a video demo of the game for those looking to play

The size of the size zero debate

September 27th 2007 07:25
The size zero debate is the new black, the latest fashion trend, which, like all fads, is probably not wise to buy (into) too much. I am not saying that the emaciated idealisation of the female body is not a problem, but that the media and public response is on the side of hysteria. For some perspective on my perspective, it should be known that I am not a size zero. I am not six foot tall, and I do not know anyone that has come under the attack of this new moralizing discourse.

Purely for the duration of MMSFW, a team of youngsters created a new concept; pop-up retail. Titled Penthouse Mouse, a group of sweet young things tidied up an abandoned warehouse tucked away amongst Melbourne's Chinatown in Market Lane (opposite the infamous Flower Drum restaurant).

More than just a pretty dress

September 2nd 2007 09:07
There is a hidden pleasure in the vintage item. Obviously, they compel for the beautiful designs, that they are probably one of a kind, and are loaded with anecdotes dating to when your mother was your age. My favourite part about old clothes is the incredible fabrics and patterns, as well as the perfect stitchwork - the only time well cared for vintage items ever falter is due to the rotting thread. My grandmother's old clothes amaze me, but I spend most of my time ooing and aahing at the seams, the hems, the way a zip, button, hook eye, dart, pleat or other has been cococted and remains, pristine.

For Australian residents, you’re probably hiding under a rock if you didn’t see any coverage over the last few weeks of the David Jones and Myer Spring/Summer launch shows. Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins were parading their respective stores’ wares and championing this season’s trends, sycophantically surrounded by media, buyers and designers alike.

Fresh from an early morning breakfast, the family and I headed to the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on Saturday morning last. As well as having a Special FX exhibit to keep the rest of them occupied, the Young Blood Designers Market was on and the Fashion from Fleece exhibit featured as part of Sydney Design 07.

In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.

Why fashion?

From Manoloblahnik.com Just try telling me that this is not beauty

With a background in literary theory and philosophy, an interest in fashion has been a naughty secret of mine for some time. But it’s time to go public. I love fashion and I’ve got good reasons. Firstly, it is aesthetically pleasing but also the social and cultural significance fashion holds are part of our everyday non-verbal communication

It's all in the curve

One the most complex conundrums of autumn/winter 2007 is the fine distinction between cocoon and bubble skirts, a difference to elucidated below with pictorial and linguistic explication.

The important difference between cocoon skirts and bubble skirts is that one is attractive, flattering and altogether desirable while the other is not. Bubble skirts are like this
