One of the biggest events on the Australian Fashion calendar has just wrapped last night. This years Rosemount Sydney Fashion Week boasted an eclectic variety of local and global designers.

Established names like Alex Perry, Akira, Lisa Ho had their work strutted on the catwalk by a bevy of beauties. Local talent Hotel Bondi Swim attracted international attention with their range of teeny swimsuits.

Model Miranda Kerr was the darling of the ball, turning heads, making headlines and impressing all in attendance.

The big controversy of the event came from bad timing as New Zealand designer Kate Sylvester donned models in war medals on the week of ANZAC day. Veterans were appalled and the media latched onto the uproar.

Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins came to a launch party for Jimmy Choo Boutique sans underwear, appropriately setting of eye bulging and innuendo.

This years festivities were a success with several up and comers breaking out and faces of the future emerging.

A whole new genre

October 2nd 2007 10:20
Galliano's last catwalk show for his own label was brash brazen bordehlo but this season for Dior he's shifted from the door-jambs of Paris to the silver-screens of Hollywood, invoking screen sirens and sirs across eras, genders and genres.

Ode to an Italian Dress

Flamboyant and theatrical, Dolce and Gabbana’s Summer 2008 collection is indeed replete with works of art. From the hand-painted fabrics, the obsession with intricate embellishments and details to the matte velvet lips, D & G invoke a Keats-ian realm - instead of a Grecian urn, this is my ode to an Italian dress

The size of the size zero debate

September 27th 2007 07:25
The size zero debate is the new black, the latest fashion trend, which, like all fads, is probably not wise to buy (into) too much. I am not saying that the emaciated idealisation of the female body is not a problem, but that the media and public response is on the side of hysteria. For some perspective on my perspective, it should be known that I am not a size zero. I am not six foot tall, and I do not know anyone that has come under the attack of this new moralizing discourse.

Tristan Blair - What Else! (LINK)

September 11th 2007 17:56
It's fair to say after trawling boutique after fabulous boutique in this beautiful city, there is noone aside from Massarro of course, who quite puts the same shine on a pair of shoes than Australian Designer Tristan Blair.

He is elusive, demure and completely humble about his creativity. I once attempted to help him source a shoe manufacturer in Brazil. He had become great friends with a man and his chicken in Bali and was loathe to change. Given my experiences in working with Brazilian timeframes I can understand why. Nothing quite happens fast enough in that country. Needless to say in a Summer that sports cotton candy and casual style you cant go past his new collection "Wonderful Armour

For Australian residents, you’re probably hiding under a rock if you didn’t see any coverage over the last few weeks of the David Jones and Myer Spring/Summer launch shows. Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins were parading their respective stores’ wares and championing this season’s trends, sycophantically surrounded by media, buyers and designers alike.

J'adore Dior

July 20th 2007 08:20
I realise I’m running a little behind the couture shows but I am grasping the moment because, as the title indicates, my infatuation with Dior continues, exacerbated by Galliano’s recent designs for their couture show.

Couture is the aesthetic height of the fashion industry epitomising Oscar Wilde’s motto: “art for art’s sake”. Certainly some of the dresses are sold but couture is a millstone round the ankle of fashion houses as far as profit is concerned. The hours and effort spend to make each dress are Herculean, the expense of fabric and beading utterly Olympian (as in the Mount not the games
