Continuing the theme of my 50’s week, I decided for my site review to cover the gorgeous creations of Stop Staring!. Upon entering the pretty pink site you’ll find you have a choice between Wholesale and Retail areas – so head to Retail for “girls who want to wear our beautiful dresses now”. This leads you through to a secondary site for viewing their showroom range, sizing, and policies. Once you’ve clicked on the Shop Online Now link, you’re again taken to another site for purchasing.

Once you do get there, it’s well worth the wait. Stop Staring! specialise in dresses and separates in vintage style. Quality made with a unique twist on retro style from 30’s through to 50’s, any self-respecting bombshell will find herself some seriously cool gear from this site.

Using American modern pinups like (my favourite) Bernie Dexter to model their wares ensures the appeal of the styles, and creates a cheesecake look to their photos. All items are in US currency, and are on the moderate side in terms of cost. Since their garments are of a high quality, I think that’s to be expected.

Fabrics and designs are carefully chosen and made, with most items sized up to an XL (and in some cases larger still) which is good news for the more buxom of us. These styles do have a tendency to flatter the curvier chicks. If you have a friend with a vintage sensibility, you can pick up a gift certificate and there’s even a gift registry! Probably more for birthdays than weddings I should think? Maybe it should be named a “wish list” instead?

All major credit cards are accepted, as well as PayPal, and returns are completed as exchanges rather than refunds. NB: there is no refund or return on items that have been custom made. This applies in particular to the Alicia Estrada Designer Collection, which has intricate and ornate Hollywood style outfits.

Their categories are based on type of clothing, popularity, and new products. Once within the category you are able to sort alphabetically etc.. I’m not sure that sorting is entirely necessary as not many of the categories take more than two web pages.

I believe that the sloppiness that is unfortunately prevalent in the web site design may be due to the fact that they rely heavily on their showroom, exhibitions and fairs as well as sales through other sites. Still, ultimately you can purchase most of their stock through the site, and heck, they’re so damn pretty you’re sure to find something to suit.

I’m completely in love with the dresses they make and am looking forward to a more financially flushed time so that I can grab a couple of dresses to hug my curves and strut my stuff, retro style. Lookout world.

In my habitual internet trawlings I came across quite a feat on the Prada website. Admittedly I didn’t much like this season’s collection but the means by which it is represented is a true cultural document. Prada demonstrates wit, self-reflexivity and pastiche in a way that many other ‘postmodernists’ should envy. As a European luxury brand, descended from a grand tradition to a commercial reality, Prada is a modern day icon but the self-representation offers an entirely new perspective on the brand.

It's all in the curve

One the most complex conundrums of autumn/winter 2007 is the fine distinction between cocoon and bubble skirts, a difference to elucidated below with pictorial and linguistic explication.

The important difference between cocoon skirts and bubble skirts is that one is attractive, flattering and altogether desirable while the other is not. Bubble skirts are like this
