New York City’s reputation as the fashion capital of North America rests on more than world-class shopping. New York is, and always has been, the working centre of the fashion industry in North America—the place where next year’s fashions are created and reported on by fashion pros inside the city’s design studios and fashion magazines. Now some of those fashion insiders are sharing their unique access to the inner workings of the fashion industry with select shoppers

Fashion veteran Kathleen Beckett is one such insider, offering her clients extraordinary access to more than 200 designers inside their showrooms, ateliers and shops. Beckett applies the knowledge, contacts, and tools she developed as an editor and columnist at Vogue, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar to demonstrate “the transformative power of fashion” with truly singular shopping experiences. She calls her business “Beckett’s Black Book.”

Beckett arranges customised shopping experiences tailored to the tastes and interests of each individual client. On one day she might escort a single client to a designer’s showroom to arrange for a piece to be custom-altered for him or her personally; on another she might lead a group to an exclusive shop for a face-to-face session with the designer whose name is on the door outside. And Beckett is careful to match client with designers. “I’m not going to bring a hip Tokyo fashionista to the esteemed-but-traditional Carolina Herrera,” she says, “or a more traditional dresser to an edgy designer like Zac Posen.”

Beckett’s relationships in the design world have even helped clients out of fashion “emergencies.” Recently, an international client visiting New York for a gala event worked with Beckett to gain access to a prominent designer’s showroom and have a dress made especially for her in only 24 hours. You might never face such an immediate fashion crisis, but Beckett can still provide a one-of-a-kind New York fashion experience. She specialises in arranging for her clients insider access to the same famous designers whose works grace the red carpet and covers of major fashion magazines.

Buying clothes is naturally an element of each foray Beckett arranges, but transactions are conducted directly between clients and designers, with Beckett often arranging special discounts. Beckett’s own services are charged hourly, with rates varying according to the particular situation. The more advance notice Beckett gets, the better she is able to prepare for a client; but if she gets a call even with just a day or two’s warning, she can sometimes still put together a uniquely compelling shopping experience. Over the next few weeks I will be posting guides on where to shop around the world so come back and see whats new.

Looking for a one-stop shop for an authentic suede-fringe vest that shimmied to the strains of Santana during the Summer of Love, an asymmetrical Halston original that glittered on the dance floor at Studio 54, or a one-of-a-kind flapper dress from the Roaring ‘20s? In Miami, you need look no further than C. Madeleine’s, a 10,000-square foot high-end vintage clothing emporium where not only movie, TV, and music superstars, but also the professionals who are paid to dress them, shop for well-preserved fashions from as far back as the late 1800s and as recent as only a couple of seasons ago

Cosby Sweater for sale on EBay

The Cosby Show is finding a resurgence in popularity as comedy fiends are digging back into the 80s for a hit of the good ol' stuff. I rented a 'Best of The Cosby Show' DVD and it was fanastic - great writing, hilarious delivery by Bill, and a great role model for families.
