Hot Pockets in Fashion
May 3rd 2006 06:18
In response to a comment about fashionable pockets in a previous post, I've decided to dedicate this post to those wonderful features of clothing that allow people to keep small and (sometimes) large objects in. Previously a purely functional characteristic of clothes, pockets are now a complex entity in fashion, with aesthetics and originality playing a large part in their design.
I bet some of you have encountered the problem of protruding pockets - it's the bulge that results from an attempt to carry your keys, phone AND wallet all in the same petite pocket. Exhibit A:
He looks cool, but the pseudo-hernia on his right hip is not a good look...there is a solution though! Deep pockets baby! By that I mean in the literal sense (although it wouldn't hurt for them to money-filled too). Just follow Amy Adams' lead:
I love the deep pockets of this dress. They are a perfect example of functional and stylish pockets - Amy can hold everything she needs in her dress, yet the pockets don't disrupt the design and cut of the garment. I'm really loving evening gown type dresses with pockets actually! Mandy Moore converted me with this great gown:
Another fabulous use of pockets is on mini shorts. Take a look at Kate's:
Notice how the inside pocket of her shorts is visible below the hem? Well, imagine you can see those pockets on both sides, that they're twice as big, and hanging halfway down her thighs, and you have my favourite kind of pockets! I apologise for the lack of a better description/picture...unfortunately I haven't seen this look on any celebrities, just people on the street. But trust me...massive pockets drooping out of short shorts look very striking!

Ah, Vince Vaughn... almost classy. It DOES look weird to have bulging pockets... like a tumour or something equally disfiguring...

Maybe that's not keys/wallet/phone/kitchen sink in his pocket but instead Vince is just happy to see someone?!?!

Maybe Mandy Moore is hiding the same thing in that puffy dress - and that's why her hand is in her pocket?

Laura I love Mandy's dress too! Who knew pockets could be so feminine
amy i don't know whether that bulge is the right shape/proportions to be an indicator of Vince's happiness in seeing someone...but bahaha at you and Cibby
