French, a singer and daughter of Serge, Charlotte Gainsbourg had to be gorgeous. Obviously inheriting more of her actress/model mother's (Jane Birkin of Hermes Birkin bag fame) looks than her brooding crooner dad. Recently she gained greater Australian exposure in The Science of Sleep, starring alongside Gael Garcia Bernaz as a Parisienne neighbour gradually drawn into a world of fantasy and phantasm. As you can see in this picture there was minimal attention paid to her hair and makeup, her wardrobe was dowdy and still she radiates beauty.

Obviously, as everything about Gainsbourg just so happens to be, as a woman of taste and style she favours Balenciaga. This black number worn to last year's Costume Institute Gala, is from Ghesquiere’s seriously high platform boot phase. Acknowledging her physique, this is a perfect dress for Gainsbourg, the high hem shows off some lovely legs and the cut of the bodice works best on those with small busts. Her trademark scruffy hair and complete lack of accessories only complement the high fashion sophistication of this outfit.

As the face of Gerard Darel, she’s appeared in advertising campaigns in Vogue inter alia. Gainsbourg looks best with this sort of relaxed styling, again the attention to hair and makeup is minimal since her bone structure and intelligent eyes preclude the need for embellishment. Interestingly enough this campaign focuses on outdoorsy images but I imagine Gainsbourg passing most of her time penning sensitive lyrics and attending dingy underground jazz concerts, perhaps I'm just projecting.

And not shy of donning trousers on the red carpet, here Gainsbourg arrives at the Very Long Engagement Premiere, feminising the man style wide-leg trouser and black blazer with unkempt hair and a suitably shabby handbag.

As for her singing, well I have to admit I haven’t really listened to any of her music but I imagine it would be somewhat akin to Carla Bruni, former model turned singer whose breathy and sensual music is enough to get any red-blooded male/female excited.

After visiting the Victoria and Albert exhibition which travelled to the National Gallery in Canberra a few years ago, I’ve been obsessed with Vivienne Westwood. It’s not just that she’s sixty and has a beautiful thirty-year-old Italian lover, although that does impress me, and it’s not just that she’s been an inspiration for generations of fashionistas, mostly it’s because for Westwood, fashion is thought
